Computer questions

I have an HP desktop that is a couple years old. It has a 2.4ghz Pentium 4, 512mb of ram and a 120gb HD. How much would it be to undate it with new components to have similar specs to this computer? I would like to use the desktop for all my music and pictures and shit like that. It works fine the way it is but I've been spoiled by my laptop. Also how hard would it be to add these upgrades myself?

The ram will be cake...The hard-drive will be cake...The CD/DVD drives will be cake...the only thing that might take you some time is upgrading the processor...

putting every thing in a computer would be easy to do...yes even the processor...but it is hard to tell you how much it will cost to do it till we get more info about your mother board

ah IC is there any way to find out, or would I just be better off buying all new components and using the existing case?

dell sucks if you get the cheap shit ive heard they put used parts in them...
but you'll have to get a new motherboard to be able to get a quad core and 3 gigs of ram (yours probably wont accept a 2 gig stick) but the cd/dvd drive and hard drives are pieces o cake o and i special ordered my hp ( 2 gigs of ram 3.2 i think ghz pentium proccesor and a gforce 5500 graphics card 256mb ddr) and havent had any trouble cept when i want to play flight sim X it gets a very little lag sometimes (but ive heard that there isnt hardly a computer that'll run it yet) any who back on topic you'll need to upgrade your graphics card too so ide say
mother board- at least $250 for a quad core one dunno tho never really checked for one
3 gigs of ram - $200 if your lucky
graphics card - for a nice one $150-200
400-500 gig hard drive- $150
and dvd burner with light scribe - $80 maybe

yeah your better off just ordering that one or just doing some light upgrades on that one..

Go to www.crucial.com for the ram...

Also I do alot of shopping on www.newegg.com

Lots of good parts...

A good video car will run you 300-400 but it will be goodtimes and should last ya a bit...

Also run the DXDIAG in the run command and see what all you have...

You're gonna need a new Mobo (2.4 P4 = socket 478) new Intel proccessors are SKT LGA775 and use DDR2, unlike your which is DDR1

also, you'll need a new GFX (PCI-e is the new standard) or buy a mobo with integrated grafics card.

Newegg is a exellent site for your computer upgrade needs.
