calipers

OK, dumb question---

If someone sits in my car with the engine on and presses on the brake pedal will I see the calipers push the pad against the rotor?

Can I see it move or will I not be able to see it?

If the caliper is still mounted to the bracket, you won't see it push against the rotor. If you pull it off and look while someone pushes the brakes, it should push out.

NO, if you are worried about your brakes put the front end up on jack stands and have someone push the brake, and hold it down than try and turn the tires if they don't move ya got whooo, if you can turn the tire you got go but no Whoo, not good!

OK good. I felt like a f-ing moron.

Im noticing what sounds and feels like maybe one of my brakes are like hung up or something. Im hearing a grinding like one of them might be froze up or something. The car is not pulling to one side or the other. I thought that was a sign when your car pulled to one side. IDK.

Anyway, I had my daughter sit in the car and press the brakes and I seen nothing moving. I know she was pressing hard enough because the brake lights were coming on. So Im glad you guys are saying I shouldnt see any movement. I know its stupid but I never paid attention before.

Can a caliper freeze up ( I hope Im using the right term) witout completely "stopping " the wheel from spinning? I mean, Im not "dragging" any tires but it sounds like shit.

It won't really pull it, but the grinding during braking, or if it starts grinding randomly even after you let off the brakes, you need a new caliper.

thanks man. I hear it all the time. I know this sounds weird but I can reaally hear it when driving next to the curb with the window down. I hear the "grind" echo off the curb if you know what I mean. It sounds like that all the time.

My Mustangs falling apart. I just put new tires on it and did some basic maintenance like the fuel filter and stuff. Now I got this grinding and the alternators givin me shit too. The battery guage is showing that its "over" charging just a bit and its giving me all kinds of little annoying symptoms. I mean, whenever I turn on anything that requires electrical power, theres a hum that comes from the alternator.
Im about ready to ditch the damn thing. I just passed 50k miles and its starting to show some age.

My right rear caliper has been freezing on me since I bought the car, once I realized it was the piston freezing against the rotor I replaced it and it's been fine since.

I went through two sets of brake pads and two sets of rear rotors in 3 years.

If I can figure out which one it is..... is that piston easy to replace or is it better to have a shop do it?

You can buy a caliper rebuild kit or just buy a remanufactured caliper assembly from a place like Napa or autozone.

When you take the old caliper off you can take it back to where you bought it and get the core charge back.

While you're there, don't forget the brake fluid because you'll have to bleed it once you put the new caliper on.

It'll end up being cheaper than having a shop do it and it's really not that hard.
