I almost rearended a Mustang who did this to his taillights. You can't see them when they're tinted.

When driving away from the sun in the evening you have tons of glare on them which makes it even harder to see.

Why would you want to do that?

on the top of my third brake light (just the top), the sun and weather have worn it. The extra tint I have from my windows should work to cover that then right?

Maybe for the effect when your not hitting the brakes. The dark look without the light on. But you can still see the light for safety.....

Oh I've seen it, both in tint and taillight covers, but I just don't understand wanting to darken lights that are there for your and every one elses safety.

Just my opinion of course.
