I'm for it, due to it having the ability to cure previously uncurable diseases, but I'll play devil's advocate as to give you another side to the debate...

99% of your opposition is going to be from the ethical/religious side, which I'm sure you are already aware of. Your Pro-lifers are going to tell you that you're basically destroying a potential human to "manufacture" an embryo for a specific purpose. I kinda see it like the movie "The Island" Where you have a bunch of clones just hanging out until they're needed, then killing them to take what you need. I know that isn't really how it's going to be, because the government would never allow us to keep and area full of people...clones or otherwise, that were basically "grown" to aid in the possible cure of potential diseases. But to some people, the destruction of the blastocyst formed from a laboratory-fertilized egg, is a human being that should be given the same opportunity anyone else had to live their life.

this is def. a science vs. Religion debate.

there are many Pros to stem cell research.
but there are also Cons.

people don't want Scientists growing "people" just to use them for research and to dispose of them but people DO want to cure diseases.

so it's more of a moral debate if anything.

I'm kind of an oxymoron. I am all for research and cures, but at the same time, natural selection must occur.

I vote "YES" on every ballot for stem cell research.

i totally agree. don't get me wrong, i'm all for curiing diseases and all, but the human race has gotten to the point where we've figured out how to "outsmart" evolution and i think it's made us weaker as a species. we're trying to live forever and it's not for "the greater good". that's a load of crap. some pretty horrible things have happened that have started with the best of intentions. the illusion is that it will make life better for everyone, but the reality is that it will probably only benefit the wealthy. do you think for a second that the government is going to pay for an organ transplant for a newborn child without healthcare simply because we have the ability to grow junior a new liver? fuck no. if you have the money to pay for it, you can have it. aside from the moral/ religious debate, one could argue that successful stem cell research would lead to a widening of the gap between social and economic classes, at least in this country. it'll be one more thing for the rich to "have" and one more thing for everyone else to "have not".

yes but i only support the new research that has developed a way to make stem cells without the use of a human fetus or any fetus.

I believe that we should focus more on living a good productive life, and doing as much good with the time we have, instead of spending lots of time and money to try to live longer. We are designed to die someday. As a relativly healthy person who tries to be healthy, I resent the fact that in some cases a poor health choice will be rewarded with the "new" ability to simply go in for stem cell therapy, and have a fresh start. That person will prolly be inclined to continue to make poor health choices.

What about people that cant help their health you say? Some of us are born with good genitics, some arn't. Those that have good genetics lose their natural advantage in life. Society is in a constant state of trying to level the playing field. Sometimes to the point that it is unfair to the greater whole.

Being a person that has had a kidney transplant, this is a very important subject to me. My Nephrologist was telling me that at the current rate of stem cell research they should be able to grown a person a new kidney from their own cells in about ten years. Since my kidney disease is a reaccuring one and it will eventually infect my current kidney that is very good news.

A kidney made from your own cells is far less likely to be rejected by your body. I don't expect people that have never been on dialysis to understand how uncomfortable it is to live like that. To be tired all the time even though I was only 22 when I was diagnosed. It is no way to live. My life literally changed over night. I didn't get my transplant until June 28, 2005. That's a 8 year wait. That's a big chunk of my life that I feel I missed a lot of things I could have been experiencing. Instead I was hooked to a chair four hours every other day. Unable to travel, unable to go out with friends like I used to, unable to drink more than 16 Oz. of water a day. (Try that for a day and see if you can do it) I'm sure you can put together a few other things it may have affected. :wink

It is even more difficult now to see my father going through the same thing I did. With stem cell research I would not have to ask a relative to go through the horrible process of donating a kidney. That surgery is harder on the donor than it is on the recipient with a much longer recovery time. I wouldn't have to wait for someone to lose their life to hope that their kidney works with my body. It is easy when you are in perfect health to stand in judgment of other, but when you or a loved one need the research that is provided by stem cell research I doubt you will be so judgmental.
