Medal of Honor for Long Island Family

A local Long Islander 2 years ago was deployed on a secret mission to tail some high ranking Taliban warlords. He was deployed with 3 fellow Navy Seals, and only 1 of them managed to survive.

There Base of Ops was in a Mountainside where they were accidentally stumbled upon by a goat herder who quickly ratted them out. They were surrounded and Lt Micheal P Murphy, fought his way out of the Mountain, into an open feild where he sustained a fatal gunshot wound as he was radioing fellow Seals in a Helicopter nearby.

Unfortunately the copter was shot down, and all inside killed as well. About a year ago the details of this mission were declassified, and his Family is set to recieve the metal of honor for the bravery of there son Oct 22.

When i read article it had me almost in tears. This guy sacrificed his Life to attempt to save 3 others, and ultimately only suceeded in 1. But it was enough to get the whole story out, and for him to recieve the proper praise he deserves.

To his family and friends, and Micheal himself, I may not know you from a line up, but I thank you, and the comrades you couldn't save that day, not for doing ur job, but for being The Best of the Best, so others don't have to.

I don't read the paper much, hardly every, but when i saw the cover I couldn't not read it. His father, in Newsday, said that Micheal believed in what he was doing, and felt this War wasn't a waste.

HOOO-RA Lt Micheal P Murphy, HOOO-RA!!!

yea and in the military that goes for everything... not just combat... if your battle buddy is hard up on bills dont leave him behind, if he is stranded somewhere never leave him behind, hell if your at a bar and he gets in a fight and goes to jail... go get him out (but that takes an SFC in the army) but they dont give a MOH out easy, 99.9% of the time you die earning one, there are 2 vetrens here at leavenworth with them, and if you earn one and your still in the military and your with an officer, salutes are rendered to you before any officers with you no matter what your rank

i think these heros along with POW's should not have to worry about anything for the rest of there lives, they should get paid a good salery just for putting there life on the line for one day, for there contry and all the people in it, another story that gets me is the battan death march, you guys should google it... it really hits home........

I agree, except if your buddy is in jail you should be sitting right next to him. LOL

I've walked most of the Batten march and stood on the steel pier on where MacArthur, departed Corregidor for Australia. And on the field where we surrendered to the Japanese. I was stationed in the Phillipnes from 1988 to 1992. With a short vacation to the sand box in…..

i did a little research and found the benifits that come along with the medal of honor....

The Medal of Honor confers special privileges on its recipients, both by tradition and by law. By tradition, all other soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen—even higher-ranking officers up to the President of the United States—initiate the salute. In the event of an officer encountering an enlisted member of the military who has been awarded the Medal of Honor, officers by tradition salute not the person, but the medal itself, thus attempting to time their salute to coincide with the enlisted members'. By law, recipients have several benefits:[34][35][36]

* Each Medal of Honor recipient may have his or her name entered on the Medal of Honor Roll (38 U.S.C. § 1560). Each person whose name is placed on the Medal of Honor Roll is certified to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as being entitled to receive the special pension of $1027 per month. As of December 1, 2004, the pension is subject to cost-of-living increases.
* Enlisted recipients of the Medal of Honor are entitled to a supplemental uniform allowance.
* Recipients receive special entitlements to air transportation under the provisions of DOD Regulation 4515.13-R.
* Special identification cards and commissary and exchange privileges are provided for Medal of Honor recipients and their eligible dependents.
* Children of recipients are eligible for admission to the United States military academies without regard to the quota requirements.
* Recipients receive a 10% increase in retired pay under 10 U.S.C. § 3991.
* Those awarded the medal after October 23, 2002 also receive a Medal of Honor Flag. The law also specifies that all 143 living Medal of Honor recipients receive the flag along with all future recipients.(14 U.S.C. § 505).
* As with all medals, retired personnel may wear the Medal of Honor on "appropriate" civilian clothing. Regulations also specify that recipients of the Medal of Honor are allowed to wear the uniform "at their pleasure" with standard restrictions on political, commercial, or extremist purposes; other former members of the armed forces may do so only at certain ceremonial occasions.
