the freedom feels good. it was weird when my separation clerk handed me the envelope with the guts of my service record. just seeing the last 9 1/2 years of my life stacked into a neat little 3 inch pile...

probably.

but he would work for the Government as a Contractor or a GS.

he would be civilian but he would basically do the same thing he does now.

thats actually awesome. Hopefully the pay and benefits are as good or better. It would be a shame to serve like that and have to get an unskilled labor job once your out.

yeah, there are civilian research subs. they explore the ocean bottom and really deep wrecks and stuff like that. i'd rather work on the ones that kill people and blow shit up. that's my forte, although i can't imagine valves on a civilian boat being that different.

Arent Navy subs nuclear? Civilian subs wouldnt be would they? Or doesnt that matter for your specific skill? You mention "valves" as your skill? what do the valves do... for like diving and rising?

I think this shit is interesting. Hunt for Red October and U571 were awesome movies. Im sure Sub life was not always so exciting. I know I coudnt do it. Clausterphobic.

yes, all the Navy's subs are nuclear powered. that's what i did. i operated the propulsion plant and systems associated with the reactor. didn't actually operate the reactor, that's a job for a different rating. basically, i pushed the boat and made potable water so we could eat, shower, cook food, etc.as far as i know, civilian subs are conventionally powered.
i was a Machinist's Mate. basically, i operated all kinds of mechanical equipment including pumps, heat exchangers, distilling plants and valves. and on top of all that, knowing the intricacies of basic nuclear physics and design. i basically had to know how all the systems in the engine room and reactor compartment work and how they're inter-related.
there's valves for all sorts of shit. freshwater, seawater, lube oil, air, hydraulics, potable water, and yes, even shit.
