i just got done changing my oil. I did everything right. The drain plug was tight, the oil filter threaded on right. The fill cap and dip stick went on right. But when I started the car is heard like a psshhhhh sound and i got out and looked and there was oil on the ground so i shut it off real quick and i popped the hood and oil had sprayed up on the hood liner and the rights side of the engine bay. I double checked everything. Could it be the o-ring on the oil filter was bad? Help please.

Snug up the oil filter with my hands snug but not really tight. should i take pics?

you forgot to make sure the rubber oring from the old filter in fact came off with the old filter. remove the oil filter and look on the engine side. i bet the old filters rubber o ring is still there 2 o rings = massive leak.

just go do what i told you to do.

you should be able to tell where its coming from....if anything try and take it back to where ever you got it...cuss them out and make them give you free oil.....i always tighten everything pretty tight....i do the oil filter as tight as i can get it with one hand and then almost always have to use to and cuss to get it off....

put more oil in it first son. or your going to have a bad dry start.

yeah but your going to have to buy new oil....well i never look at the bottom of those motors but if the filter is at the bottom which it should be almost all the oil is going to come out....might as well change it all again if thats the case....

over tightening the oil filter can actually damage the engine. there is a bypass valve in the filter if you put it on to tight the filter will jammed in bypass mode and your oil will not be filtered.

Get more oil, filter can be reused.

once the rubber o ring gasket contacts its seating turn the filter 1/4-1/2 turn and dont tighten it any more. there is no need to it will not leak. dont beleive me read the side of your oil filter. every filter i have ever touched says it right on the label.

I have another quart of oil here, so your saying to put that oil in to drive it up on the ramps and just deal with the oil that goes all over the place?

what no listen to what i speak

1) remove old o-ring and re attach oil filter so it wont leake this time.

2) Check oil level.

3) use your brain and figure out how much youve lost from your previous brain fart.

4) add oil as needed.

5) check for leaks make sure oil level is correct and then call it a day and go for a drive.

When installing your new oil filter, Red, always smear the o-ring on the filter with a film of oil. Then spin the filter on until it's snug, and then give it another 1/2 turn or so. It should be fairly tight, but not over tightened.

Oh and by the way, even if you've lost a little oil, you won't hurt anything in the 10 seconds it takes to drive it up on the ramps. Just don't get all wound up and take it easy driving it up. It's when we're all wound up like this that shit happens.
