take one of the equations and solve for a single variable (whether it be the x or the y). in this case it is easier to solve for the y of the second equation. So:

2x-y=7
2x=7+y
2x-7=y

the sub y into the other equation and solve for x

4x+3(2x-7)=4
4x+6x-21=4
10x=25
x=2.5

then sub the value of x back into the equation to solve for y

2(2.5)-y=7
5-y=7
-y=2
y=-2

so X=2.5 and Y=-2

another way to do it.. besides just substituting is to add/subtract the equations.

IE-

4x + 3y = 4
2x - y =7

Well, lets find x first.

Multiply the 2nd equation by 2 to make them both have 4x.

2(2x - y = 7)
=
4x - 2y = 14

then subtract that from the first equation-

4x + 3y = 4
- 4x - 2y = 14
5y = -10
y = -2

then substitute the y in any of the equations..
2x - y =7
2x - (-2) = 7
2x = 5
x=2.5
