starting my own business......

well, ive wanted to do it for years and it seems lately the stars have just aligned and the timing is right. My best friend (hes my mechanic also) and I are opening a dyno shop in the memphis TN area. our building will be completed in early january.

we will be geared mainly towards the LSX line of engines, but we will also do some mustang engine building and tuning as well.

we plan on having the best prices in town for dyno tuning and also providing the absolute BEST customer service ever. (if you have read any of my threads lately you know what a difficult time ive had with a local shop on customer service)

we have one of the best tuners in the country on board with us (formerly tuned for Comp Cams)

I will keep everyone posted on our progress.

wish us luck!!!!

good luck! Be ready to be poor for a year or two. If you have a good business plan, you'll be good after that.

IMO- I talk to about 10 businesses per day and consult them on best practices and just had this conversation with Florida Natural Growers last week.

If you get this thing going, use direct mail marketing. I get more postive feedback and positive results using direct mail. Openability, response rates and average sale all go up with a clean targeted mailing list. USData has some great options and are cheap as far as demographically oriented lists.

Keep your name on peoples minds by any means necessary.

Good luck man!

No problem. I will not be able to aid you in the engine building side, however the business side, labor rates, GM%, burden rates, business plan, customer retention, disputes, vendors, advertising, I deal with daily.

Thats awesome man

I'd love to do this someday.

You should have like a real cheap dyno day and cruise or something, where everbody could get dyno'd for like $15 or $20.

Street smart marketing works real well too. Im not sure what the correct term for it is but it has to do with cross marketing.

Find another local business and combine efforts in a promotion.

I had a muffler shop team up with a local Mcdonalds. The coupon was for a free Big Mac when you had Monroe shocks put on. It had an impressive response rate. I personally thought the coupn should have been better than a $3 big Mac considering the cost of the shocks but it worked for them. You get the idea though. Help bring business to a partner marketer.

Both businesses received a benefit. Nobody went to theat Mcdonalds and just got the free big Mac, they all bought something else of profit while they were there. In return, the Mcdonalds did not have the expense of printing or distributing a coupon.

The Muffler shop made out because they were able to give something away of limited value at little or no expense to them.

Be creative. Make business friends in your community. Engage and show up to every Chambers of Commerce meeting.

Have days were 50% of profits are donated to a local favorite church.

If you have an infrastructure of a solid basic business, you can make it work. The businesses that fail are the ones that dont have a plan or are willing to get crazy motivated about bringing in new business everyday. spend your money smart on marketing and be involved.

I could write about this all day. It can be fun and extremely rewarding.

Memphis, TN? Thats where I live.

It's going to be hard competing with Dynospeedracing since they have been around for quite a while and win just about every competition.

It should not be hard to beat their prices though... they are kinda high!

Dude cool, my Stang should be done early next year, Memphis is no to far away for a super Dyno. Chexk out my stang. Not to much dyno action down here. I will need a dyno break in on the new motor. Keep advised of your progress. W>P>

Good luck. Its going to be hard to make a living with just a dyno. Dynos are usually supplement incomes for businesses, not the bread and butter. Partners are always fun too, especially if it is a relative or friend. Statistics have you set up for failure already and you and your buddy no longer being buddies. I'm not trying to piss on your parade but these are things you should be looking at before you get into this mess. Good luck with your journey.

good way to kick off your business would be to have a dyno shoot out. post flyers and pay some of the bigger radio stations for an ad. have an entry fee and a payout

ive been in their shop numerous times and have never seen one LSX car in there. a few imports and the rest stangs.

anywho.....we will be set up in a completely different part of town. im confident we will have plenty of work.

my partner and mechanic is one of the best in this area, or anywhere else for that matter.

it will take a little time to build up our name and reputation.....but it took dynospeed some time to do the same thing.
