Career? Any Engineers Out There?
Hey guys I am currently applying to college and i would love as much input as i can get.
I am applying to- Stanford, UCBerkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC with SDSU as a fallback school (i'm automatically accepted to there) I THINK i wanna go into engineering, but I am not sure. Most of these schools make you declare a major (going in undeclared i have heard also lowers your chance of being accepted) I also don't know what engineering i want to go into... Mechanical- would be cool.. working on cars and stuff sounds pretty sick Computer Science - sounds cool as well.. i love computers, i mean i spend A LOT of time on mine.. and Artificial intelligence and stuff like that would be interesting Aerospace- Who wouldn't wanna work on planes and spaceships? Definitely not a dying art. Structural/Civil - Making buildings has a lot of cool potential for creativity and stuff. Anyways, my goals are to obviously make a lot of money and to ENJOY my job.. i would also hope to be creative as an engineer.. like be able to design stuff... so if there are any engineers out there or architects or car designers or anything related to this, could you let me know (here or in PMs) about what your job is like, what you like, what you don't like? Also, if you're like a manager or something.. what schools produce the best of your job or which ones are prestigious in your job? thanks anyone in advance.

Well there will be alot of things to do
you'll learn all kinds of precision intstruments things that require LOTS of common sense its kinda like myth busters and requires alot of skills like math and science i thought about engineering but when he mentioned alot of math i was like NOPEEE!, dont finish that, not interested, have a nice day

I'm a registered land surveyor in my state and civil engineers are in great demand in my area. The current housing slump has slowed things abit, but its just a matter of time til things boom again. An entry level degreed civils are starting out at about 45k+ and after licensure and 2-3 years experience are making 60k+.

Civil engineering is the general catch all for those that can't make it in other forms of engineering. I've been thinking long and hard about what degree i want to go for...a little late in the game for me, I'm 27...but i haven't wasted my life, been working a highly technical electronics job in the air force for the last 9 years.
I was recently involved in a system design/testing for equipment the air force was looking at buying...that allowed me to get some hands on experience with engineers from different aspects. Here is what i have found...mechanical engineers are in the highest demand right now...everyone jumped on the technology bandwagon, now companies are struggling to find people in that field. Electrical engineers are still also in high demand...even if they are retarded. Your degree is going to be VERY involved...dont expect to pass by just getting by. Math will be very intense, but applying the math to the theory will be even more intense. Overall, i say either electrical or mechanical are great ways to go. |

I'm pretty sure that optical engineering is a subfield of electrical engineering...you have to start off with the broad concept, then as you go through college you narrow down your field.
I have a friend that works on the telemetry/navigation systems on satellites...his degree was based on electrical engineering. Its kinda like being a doctor...either your a general doctor or your in a specialized field. |
