Mustangs have been in continuous production for over 40 years. They created an entirely new category of cars that fit somewhere between a sports car and a muscle car and have been copied by all other domestic manufacturers. They have outlived all of their pony car competition. And, your GT is one of the most powerful production mustangs ever built. The advertised 300 net hp transulates to around 375 gross hp.

Welcome to the forum.

I think it was in 1972 that they changed the way they rated horsepower. The old way was gross horsepower which is horsepower at the flywheel with no accessories. The new way is net horsepower which is rated at the flywheel with the generator, waterpump, etc. attached. The general rule of thumb is net is 80% of gross. Actually, I've never understood why its a percentage instead of a flat 50 horsepower, but it is. It's similar to the 15% loss from the flywheel to the wheels rule of thumb for manual transmissions.

So if your comparing today's muscle cars with the muscle cars of the 60s you have to convert the rated horsepower from net to gross. Even though its not totally accurate, dividing net horsepower by .8 gives you a good approximation of what today's motors would have been rated back then. That is of course if they weren't playing games for insurance reasons. I've read that the 428 Cobra Jet was advertised at 335 hp but that it actually had around 400. Ford's 390 was rated at 320 gross hp. One of the dominate production cars of the 60s was the Chevelle 396. It's most powerful version was rated at 375 gross horsepower. About the same as an '05-07 GT.

yeah, most auto manufacturers advertise the crank hp of the engine, not the rwhp. so when they say 300hp, they mean 300 crank hp. i think the S197's dyno somewhere in the 265-275 rwhp range bone stock

Yes. Gross hp was also measured at the crank. I like to compare my GT with muscle cars I've owned in the past. Particularly, my 1966 Dodge Coronet 500. It had a 426 wedge with headers, intake, and a dual-line holly carburator. It had around 425 gross hp, maybe a little more. I have read that the 426 hemi, a comparable motor, was underrated at 425 gross hp and that it was supposed to have approximately 375 net hp.

With the Procharger, my GT dynos at 385 rwhp. That is approximately 452 (385/.85) net hp (at the crank) and approximately 566 gross hp (452/.8). This is an approximation and people argue over whether it's a 12% loss through a manual drivetrain instead of a 15% loss and whether it's a 15% loss with accessories instead of a 20% loss. Even using the lower numbers, it calculates to about 514 gross hp.

I think its cool that the new Mustangs are comparable to the big dogs of the past.

Something happened with the fonts in the previous post. If you highlight the words with your cursor, you can read it. Pasting from a Word document apparently doesn't work.
