Answer This For Me (Drivetrain Power Loss)

The 2005+ Stangs have around 260rwhp stock. They have 300 HP at the crank, which is about a 40hp drivetrain loss. Wouldn't the same thing be the case for a 460rwhp supercharged application? 40rwhp would be 500 HP at the crank right. How would the blower affect drivetrain loss?

you lose power at a percentage.... its not this car has a 40hp loss no matter what.

So what you're saying is that the higher the HP the higher the drivetrain loss?

correct, a rule of thumb is that with an automatic transmission, the drivetrain loss is usually around 20%, and with a manual its usually around 15%, but of course you can lower the drivetrain loss with things like aluminum driveshaft, etc.

Heres a easy conversion...

Manual - 15% drivetrain loss
Automatic - 20% drivetrain loss

It is no where near exact but it is a good estimate...

Common wisdom says that parasitic loss is generally between 12-15%.

But that all depends on your drivetrain set-up,the amount of rotational mass your have to overcome etc etc.

drivetrain loss is a percentage because of mainly 1 thing, friction

the energy has to be transferred from the engine to the wheels via energy transfer. energy is lost the whole way thru. when the pistons go up and down, you're reducing horsepower cuz the crank is grinding against something, creating friction. the heavier it is, the more friction is made. then the power travels to the transmission and such, moving the individual gears and losing power and creating heat the whole time. your rear gears get hot too.

the same way your brakes get hot when you stop, you have to negate the energy your car has.. so heated tires and brakes/fluid are the results
