Do we take care of our poor enough?
I got into a debate with my brother and I want to share the idea to see what you think...
about 15 years ago, I ran a WIC route for the government. For you who arent familiar, WIC stands for Women Infants and Children. My job was to deliver necesities like formula, cheese, beans, milk and stuff like that. It is paid for by the Federal government with some funding coming form local government. Anyway, I had one of the worst delivery routes in Detroit. It was like third world. If it wasnt for me delivering to some of these homes, the children would not have had anything to eat. Parents and guardians with drug habbits were commonplace. Of course, they spent their moey on their habits before food for the kids. One day, I was stopped in a bad area going over my paperwork in my truck. I was trained to be aware of what was going on around me but for some reason I had let my guard down. 2 men approached my truck. One went to the back door (It was a step van) and the other came to the steps. To make a long story short, he pulled a gun out of his Steelers jacket and demanded money. I did not carry money and after I showed him the contents of my pockets he was a bit frustrated and I sensed it. He then demanded " a case of orange juice". I threw a quart down by his feet and when he bent down to grab it, I took off like a bat out of hell. He was yelling at me as a left " You'll be back motherfucker! I know your truck!" He knew my route was the same down that street once per week at the same exact time. He was going to get me next time I came. The cops caught him and prosecuted him. He got 10 years for stealing federal property. So my brother says " The reason they do those things is because we dont take care of our poor and unfortunate well enough here in the US" Thats bullshit. I may have had a gun pulled on me but that dude "robbed" from the little kids in his own neighborhood when he did that. Am I wrong? We supported those families at all costs. It was very physical work running those routes. I think he robbed me because he was on drugs or something. I think we take good care of the poor. Screw someone for pulling a gun on me for what ended up being orange juice. |

Milk Cheese butter milk eggs cereal (life and king vitamin or something like that) peanut butter, beans, rice. The expensive stuff was Similac and Neutramagen formula. It was like $120 per case. It sucked lugging those things up 5 flights of stairs in the projects. Stuff was heavy. |

I don't buy into this poor shit. I think the government goes too far in taking care of the "poor" in some areas. The welfare plan is a joke. Don't have kids if you can't afford to take care of them. If you don't have a job, get a job like the rest of us hard working americans. If you are too lazy to work then suffer the consequences. Most of the time poor is self inflicted and self remedied....but you have to want to remedy the problem which is another problem in itself. Walmart, gas stations, hotels, factories, etc. always have help wanted signs yet I see so many people standing on corners holding buckets for money with signs saying "help, I'm homeless". Go get a damn job!

I have plenty of money.
I don't think I could bring myself to killing her with a gun. I might eat her though. .. if I get hungry enough.

I agree with Darrell. Most of the "adults" were wiccers for life as we used to call them. They had no intention of getting off the system. I had a house that had like 9 kids in it. The mother was no where to be found so the old grandmother took care of them. Those kids were always so happy to see me on Tuesdays. I'd always give them extra stuff and write it off as damaged and destroyed.
I felt bad for the little kids. I tried not to because it made the job very hard. You guys cant imagine what Ive seen and how some people live. But I dont think the guy robbed me because we as society werent taking care of him. Well, we ended up taking care of him anyway for 10 years in jail. |

I have no problem helping people less fortunate then me...
I have had a person ask me for money at walmart... I told them okay lets go inside and I will buy you some food and groceries...I will not just give out cash...I will however take them grocery shopping... I do this once or twice a year...I dont make a ton of money but I live comfortably...So I hep a family out...Back in my home town they have an angel tree for family's though... It gives them a gift certificates to the grocery store...I give at least $200 to the fund and a family gets to use it to buy groceries...It makes me feel good to give back... I bought into the "pay it forward" movement in my own little way... People helped me and my family when we had fallen on bad times...And so I do the same...I dont do it for a tax break...I dont do it for anything else other then to help a family... Personally I believe if you can help a family then do it...I can do it so i do... I wont give out money...Becuase 3 times out of 5 it does not get spent on the right things...Crack dealers and liquor stores dont take kroger certificates... Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime. |
