Need Computer Help

hey guys, i've got a problem with my 80G external hard drive. it's making this weird clicking noise, and my computer doesn't recognize that the drive is connected at all. all my music is on that drive. is it fucked? i suspect that it is. i've tried disconnecting and reconnecting it, but it just does the same thing. all it does is click, then make sounds like it's trying to operate properly. if it's toast, is there any way i can recover the data on it to transfer to a new hard drive?

sata = serial ata (newer style in desktop computers)
ide = the older ribbon style connection in desktops
but i dont think they measure externals by that...

it sounds like its bad to me
but i would wait and know for sure by other people.
if so i've heard you can put em in the freezer for a while and sometimes they work for long enough to get your info off of
last ditch effort maybe?

weird. it just unfucked itself. don't know how, but it's working now. okay, so, new question. what would be the easiest way for me to transfer data from this external to another one?
i'll probably just hit Best Buy this weekend and pick up a new (bigger) one...

the main idea behind the question was how to save the data if i couldn't access it on the computer. for a little while (about 30 min), my computer didn't recognize that the drive was connected, and all that time it was making that weird clicking noise. then all of a sudden, it just stopped and the drive popped up on "My Computer"...
thanks for the help guys, rep coming your way...
