computer help

i got a sony vaio vgn-fe880e
im running vista home premium
last night i noticed my little connect icon said i wasnt connected(the little network like icon has a red x) well i moved the cursor over it and it says

Connection status: unkown
server execution failed

the network sharing center says the same.

and my screen saver slideshow stopped working. and my dvd player's not working

the only thing ive d/l lately is a processor patch that sony said was needed. other than that i havent done anything i havent done before

i tried system restore. but when it reboots it says an error has occured and didnt change anything.

any help?

could be a virus could be just the driver
it might have some problems with vista?
did you really download it from sony? could be like a virus from another place seeing that they said that it was REALLY needed

no it was my desktop vaio updater that linked me to sony's site. ive downloaded from there before.

vista problem? like part of it or all of it. i dont see how a glitch in the o/s would cause all that in a short amount of time. about 3 hours. ive had this system for about a year now. first problems.

may have something to do with the driver... can't find the words here... operating with the OS and actually how it utilizes the processor? i don't know if that makes sense
