Its a bird its a plane....

Im probably the only dork that actually likes to identify aircraft whenever I see them. Military, commercial whatever. This link has real time flight data. Ive seen similar sites for other metro areas. Well, whatever, I know a few around here that will get a kick out of this.

Actually, im surprised the FAA allows this since its only delayed a few minutes and shows altitude and aircraft type.. even destination in some cases.

i do the same.. i'm not too great with civilian aircraft, but i can name just about every military aircraft that ever flies over.. usually just formations of C-130's since i live near lockheed martin (marietta plant) and dobbins AFB.. there is of course the occasional AH-1 Cobra, Huey, Blackhawk, F-18, and C-141, but i think it is particulary awesome when i see F-22's and C-5's.. those C-5s are so fucking huge, they can be thousands of feet in the air, an you'll swear they are only inches above your head.. they move so slowly that it seems like they will drop out of the sky at any second

Have you ever seen flight explorer? It is real time of EVERY airplane in the country on an IFR flightplan, and gives tail number, type aircraft, departure time, arrival time, altitude, and airspeed. You can search by any field, or display everything. It's how all flight departments track their flights, and available to anyone.

What you have posted ith Radar data inposed on a graphic map, the info you get when you click on a target is what we call a data block, what we ATC have in that block is a lot more info, then is shown here. As a controller I can even add notes to the block i.e plt is a DWE = pilot is a dick with ears

Hey Ja

Since you asked yesterday, I got an email today with a press release about the F-15 fleet. From what it said, of the 440 planes grounded, they are planning on returning 260 to duty and leaving 180 idle due to suspected structural flaws. They may try to repair those, but there's concerns with that. They have beef-up plates installed on different areas on F-15s, and the installation of those plates mearly relocates stress points on the aircraft. So they're going to determine whether the repair would be worth it, or if they should pump that money into buying F-22s.
