They're going to put an airplane on a giant treadmill, and run it against the airplane, and see if the plane can take off.

Why on earth would they think it would take off? Lift is created at the wings, not the wheels............ sigh. Are they out of myths already?

Very true, and if the power of an airplane were applied to the ground you'd be right.

it wont work. an aircraft can not recieve the necessary amount of lift in a stationary position.

Why would the aircraft be in a stationary position?

im sure they wont go so far as to move a giant treadmill WITH an aircraft on it to the required speeds to create enough lift to allow an aircraft to take off

Wow, you sound like one of those college profs teaching aeronatics or human flight factors and here I am the grubby little college kid with 25 hours in my book thinking of scheduling my solo test in a week.

I consider myself rational and imaginative, but could you please explain what you mean by the power of an airplane applied to the ground? Do you mean VTOL? What kind of power?

Err, maybe I should just google myth busters and see what they plan on doing.

Because you're not telling us all the parameters of the test and expecting us to make drastic assumptions of the test procedures.

What do you want to know? The treadmill moves in the opposite direction of the aircraft. The speed of the treadmill, and type aircraft doesn't matter.

Right, VTOL, but saying "airplane" assumes standard horizontal thrust. I mean, hell, I could say airplane and you'd think VTOL but maybe I meant technology developed on the planet Orangatabula where thrust is generated in inverse proportion to the irony of a hipsters statement on musical preferences and the whole planet moves out of the way of the vehicle thereby creating an effect much like instantaneous teleportation.
