350

im going to do a chevy 350 project... how much can i pull a 4 bolt main 350 v8 from a junkyard for, avg price from yard to yard?

first i got to buy a stand... how much are those too?

i'm going to slowly build on it for a couple years as i get money, then my dad is gonna go half in on helping me get an old car, prolly a nova or duster or somethin to drop it in, and help me build the car.

instead of workin on my DD, im gonna just build a different engine now and put it in something else... since learning to build an engine is my real interest neway.

Sounds like a fun project,

The standard price for a rebuildable core, long block Chevy 350ci has been $350.
You might find a stand for $45.

itll be moved, but stay away from a 83+ 350 your getting junk, try to find an old 71-74 350 and remove the emissions stuff, probably looking at 500 if you pull it from a scrap yard 1000ish if the scrap yard pulls it for you

dude building a motor is not just nut here nut there
each piston must face the correct way
each bolt the correct hole
each main cap in the EXACT spot
each bearing must be placed the correct way when your putting the new bearing in
you must check end play
make sure your thrust bearing has the correct width on it .1 will makea worlds different
most importantly your rod caps MUST go on EXACTly as they came off, if you forgot and dont know which way it goes and was switched around you can easily damage the motor
Plastigaging journals
properly lubricating the CORRECT side of the rod, main and thrust bearings
also hexing your cylinders and checking for correct wear

and thats only some of just whats IN the block
if you dont know what all that means i wouldnt attempt it at all

... do your homework... also might want to pick up a speedway motor catalog... they have tons of chevy parts and they are at low prices cause they usually cater towards the dirt track racers so they try to cut them a break...

also for you 2.3'rs they have some parts for yall if ya care

you need an engine hoist
and this be able to know this:

each piston must face the correct way
each bolt the correct hole
each main cap in the EXACT spot
each bearing must be placed the correct way when your putting the new bearing in
you must check end play
make sure your thrust bearing has the correct width on it .1 will makea worlds different
most importantly your rod caps MUST go on EXACTly as they came off, if you forgot and dont know which way it goes and was switched around you can easily damage the motor
Plastigaging journals
properly lubricating the CORRECT side of the rod, main and thrust bearings
also hexing your cylinders and checking for correct wear

and more

yea, if its a project cool, youll get to learn, but christorres is right, the biggest things about motors, atleast the 4.6, is the mesurements. if you off just a little you can screw som shit up, and remember there will always be unexpected shit that breaks

go with the 351W it's a bad ass motor and your options are endless.

408, 427. they make some wicked power, especially when you add boost....a 351 with a procharger will dish out well over 1,000 hp with the right setup.

just make sure you make it forged.

and i wouldnt say dont attempt it, just learn as you go and make sure everything is right, get a manuel, i like chiltons, and just take your time, make sure you know where every bolt goes, and if you take anything off, and i mean anything, make sure it goes in the exact spot you took it from. plastic baggies help to keep orginized. and some things can have lets say 3 bolts holding it on, and they can all be diffrent lengths, so make sure the right bolts go in the right hole.
