the first thing that people think is wrong with their computer is that it has a virus or spyware. This is NOT completely true. While spyware may be the culprit or even a virus, its usually the user ignorance to routine maintenance. When was the last time the computer was defragmented? Scandisk? Also if you have the original windows disk you can run a system file check. Go into the run command and type "sfc /scannow" This will check for corrupted system files. Another good thing to get is some sort of registry cleaner/compacter. I recommend going to download.com and searching for a registry cleaner. There are a lot of good free ones out there for single users. For anti-spyware, Adaware 2007 is a great free one...and so is Spybot search and destroy. If in the near future you want to buy something....personally i like norton internet security since you get antivirus and a personal firewall, and the get norton system utilities. Systems utilities has LOTS of great tools to optimize you system. If yur gettin any weird HEX errors, send me a PM and ill help ya out.

+1. These are things you should do on a regular basis anyway. Defrag and all the basics help keep things running smooth. Its like Metamucil for your computer.

Watch smitfraud...It is NOT all that friendly to your PC...

yeah my pc is just a function device everything is stored on externals, which I unplug when i clean it, and it isnt the network, its the programs that let me access the linux system the school uses and it deletes all my login info so i have to go back and reset up all my connections if I use CC

Depending on your OS you can type msconfig into the run box. There you can shut off all the programs that load every time you turn the computer on. I also use a program called tea timer (from the spybot guys) that will ask me to allow any changes to the registry. That way i can deny all the programs that feel like they need to auto load every time. Even then i still usually reformat about every other year to bring the computer fully back to health. I always laugh when people have computers that are very nice but a few years old and "running slow" so they go buy a new one instead of reformating.

MSCONFIG is goodtimes...

But only mess with the StartUp tab unless you know what you are doing...

You can do some damage in there...
