So I got back to work today... finally got that $#*& power steering pump off. One of the guys in my club kindly suggested just taking the screw out of the front cover, but not disconnecting the whole pump and just tie it up out of the way. Made life a bit easier, but I sat there for 20-30 minutes turning this 2" fine thread screw 1/8th turn at a time with a lil' 10mm wrench. Having a flex-head ratcheting wrench set would be nice...

Anyway, after that it was pretty much smooth sailing for the next couple hours... got the exhaust disconnected, finally drained the oil, took some of the bottom bolts off the timing cover, pulled the crank pulley off, took off the valve covers... Hopefully tomorrow I'll get that darn front cover off and if I can get my lazy arse friends over I can get the heads off.

Oh, and here's my wimpy $20 toolset that has more than paid for itself. I keep this thing under my passenger seat at all times.

For anyone who cares (nobody apparently) I got the front cover off tonight, along with the timing chains and broke over all the head bolts I could get to. Have to get my hands on a 1/2" drive u-joint now.

Yes I do need to invest in some tools. And some better friends apparently, haha.
I'm going to see if I can con my parents into going to sears with me and getting me one of those metric mechanic's tool sets @.@ You know... so I can take it with me to college.... hah.

Too late.. but I can put the chain back on?

But why? I was planning on using cam gears that are already on my new cams... The marks are in the same spot right?

Humjaba:

You can use the gears that are on the cams you got. I have the aftermarkte cams that have no gears on them. Thats why i said that. I broke a cam gridle getting the one cam out until i figured out u can put a 3/8 extension down in the back of the cam and then use a breaker bar to get the cam bolt off.

Well I finally got one of my lazy arse friends over and we got the heads off. Used some vice grips to get that dipstick out. We broke it in half because we were mad at it Switching over the parts today and putting on the new heads (hopefully). Wish us luck @.@

Well a couple guys from the local car club came over and helped me get the heads back on. We got the cams all lined up and everything and got the timing chain on there as well. Wohoo! Now I get to put everything else back on and hope it runs.

I got the front cover back on this morning, the power steering pump, and got the valve covers ready to install.

More progress tonight. Got autolite one-step-colder-than-stock spark plugs gapped to .050 and installed them. Put the valve covers on, put the bracket and power steering reservoir back on and hooked it up, put the radiator reservoir back on and hooked it up.

Tomorrow morning on go the coil packs and boots and the intake. Then tomorrow night hopefully my buddy Neil will be over and we can hook my exhaust back up, and then the plenum/tb/intake tube. Fill her up with fluids and fire it up!

My engine:

This is what happens when the car sits in the garage for 2 weeks and you live in the country:

I do have a question though- I didn't put oil on the passenger side cams and stuff before I put the cover on. Chilton's didn't say to, so it's probably not a huge detail, but I've heard it'd be good. Can I pour some in via the PCV tube? I know that's how you're supposed to load up on seafoam... oil not work the same way?
