10% Ethanol..?

Alright, tonight I followed my g/f to the local QuikTrip gas station while she filled up so we could just follow one or the other from there. Well, I parked at the pump next to hers and noticed that there was a newly affixed "plaque" i guess you could call it that read "May Contain Up To 10% Ethanol." I was wondering if any of you had noticed this at your local gas stations when fueling up. Also, I was wondering how it could be good to have to different types of fuel running through my gasoline engine.. I mean.. I'm no expert on this kinda stuff, but It sounds like it probably wouldn't be the best thing. What do you guys think?

yeah its been 10% ethanol in CA for years.

It just gives my car worse gas mileage than 100% gasoline. but it wont hurt anything

my car runs like shit off e85, i always go in and ask which pumps dont have it in it they normally have a list. If your car is made for it it is fine but if it isnt it runs crappy. I'm pretty sure any 99+ mustang can run off e85 ok. My car says not to run it in the manual though

really?

Ive never noticed any crappy running scions in CA, and all the cars here brand new and older ones seem to run ok on it.

Its just a filler so they can keep the prices down. Most of the time its only in the regular unleaded not the 91+ stuff. It will be ok to run since its a low dose the only downside with it is the worse gas mileage. It should actualy net more power because it raises the octane level a little.

Yeah I just realized that e85 ethanol is probably different than (the lowest here is )87 octane with 10% ethanol mixed in.

yeah, the lowest in my area is 87.. which is what i filled up w/ last time at a different gas station that didnt have the same "disclaimer" simply becuase their 87 was 35 cents cheaper per gallon than the 91 which i usually go with.. wtf? lol

e85 is just 85 octane with 10-15% ethanol from corn to make it 87 octane. so it should be the same thing

thats really strange! I mean ,I cant imagine toyota would make different set ups for different states. Maybe its like " if you don't have to run it, then don't"

Obviously Californian scion owners dont have a choice

well I know CA scions have an extra cat and the heads on them are a bit different so they will meet green car status in CA so the head redesign could be the factor since it burns a bit different

Alot of its in the seals. The alcohol realy dries out the seals on the older cars so the newer cars have different material for the seals.

E-85 is a corn based product. If you run E-85 in a vehicle not equipped to handle its corrosive nature, you will rupture your fuel lines, over-burden your pump and tweak the hell out of your injectors.
E-85 contains much higher octane points than perto-based fuels, but it requires more of it to obtain the same results as fossil-fuels.
Higher octane, lower temp. Great for boost, not so much foe fuel economy. Its saving grace is that is, on average, $.30-$.40 cheaper, per gallon, than regular fuel.

As for the "may contain up to 10% ethanol" portion, its 89RMo octane fuel. The gov't has mandated that all gasolines contain the disclaimer due to the growing trend of the E-85 and the looming 35MPG minimum that will hit in a few years.
