Leaded vs Unleaded

I get the basic idea behind the chemistry but I still have a Kwes-chon.

When was a kid in the 70's, I had an afro. OK, thats irrelevant. My Moms and Pops had Suburban. It ran on leaded gas if I remember right. The other day, I seen the same year Suburban cruisin around. How the hell does he get gas? Will an engine (I believe it was a 454) run fine on unleaded even though it was made for leaded gas? Is that what the "lead substitute" at AZ is for?

Just wondering.

I shouldnt say fro. More like massive bowl head. The style has actually came back around in a weird way. These kids think they are slick with their hair all long over their face. That was the style in the 70's because we couldnt afford regular haircuts.

Yes, you fill up with unleaded, put in lead substitute (so much per gallon) and you're good to go.

You can rebuild engines to take straight gas too, though don't ask me how. I know my mustangs motor originally took leaded.

it's ok to run unleaded....it take 10's on thousands on miles to remotely put any damage on the valve seats

Leaded gas is history...it was originally added to gasolene as an anti-knock compound, but extremely polutant. Modern electronic ignition technology was developed to due away with the need for a leaded additive in fuel in the 80's.

So pretty much there is knock sensors to retard the timing to prevent knocking instead of a lead additive?

hence the reason is was so easy to make power in leaded cars. VERY resistant to knock (think 60s & early 70s muscle cars)

the funny part is they(oil companies) raised the prices for unleaded gas cuz they said they had to "un-lead" the gas, as if the gas already had lead in it when it was refined from cude oil
