So, a big rig with a 53' trailer decided to use my car as a speed bump today. - Page 3

Amen to the previous 2 posts...

Show them respect - if it weren't for our truckers, we would have no fresh veggies and fruits or gas for our beloved cars!

Well my doctor has put me off work until June 2nd now (at least, possibly longer). Insurance hasn't said anything to me yet, gonna call 'em Monday to see if they have an update for me. The weird thing is, I got a call from the owner of Roseneau (the company where the driver who hit me works) on Friday and he wants me to get back to him right off way, I called him Saturday morning but got no answer so I'll call him Monday. It just makes me wonder what the hell he wants.

get a lawyer before you talk to the owner.. any injury lawyer worth a crap would jump on your problem.... the owner has one and so does the insurance company.. just make it a fair fight... my .02 cents...

P.S. use lawyers only as needed or as speed bumps

I'd not speak to the owner of the company without a lawyer. Definately not.

I think truckers are as important as any other transport system... I haven't heard of anyone getting run over by a plane or a train making a right turn... and being on the right side of a truck is a major common sense no-no... sometimes the truck puts me there but I don't stay for long..

I have been driving trucks for almost 20 years.

I would just like to say I am really pleasantly surprised at everyone's comments about this. It may not mean much to you guys, but this is my life, and my career.

No one is more saddened by me over the lack of professionalism by many 'drivers' out there nowadays. It pisses me off when I see another truck driver doing something stupid, rude, or as seems to happen more and more, even being an asshole on purpose.

Let me just say that no one, no one, more than us truck drivers would like to see those drivers have their licenses torn up. They are a disgrace to the industry, and they give the rest of us a bad name. Because the problem is when you're in such a large vehicle, driving stupidly or like an asshole on purpose can have such catastrophic results that everyone sees.

But on the flip side, many 4 wheelers (that's what us truckers cal you little bastids lol), don't understand how trucks maneuver, steer, stop, or what we do on the highway. Many don't understand that when we're going slow from a stop, or up a hill, it's because we're banging through 10, 15, or 18 gears to get 80,000 lbs or more of somebody's groceries, or somebody's medical supplies, or somebody's furniture, or car parts, or building supplies, or cars, moving. There is just no way to get that moving fast.

Or that if you were screaming up the middle lane at 75 with your cruise on (which is fine, I do the same in my 4 wheeler), you get pissed off if we move in to the center lane, and you think we just did that to be a dick. Not likely. We were probably moving over from the right lane to let another 4 wheeler(s) on to the highway from a ramp, because that's what we're taught to do, because merging on the highway is where a lot of accidents happen. And may be why in big cities we stay in the middle lane when there is heavy traffic. So we're not fighting our way back and forth. Why didn't we just stay in the right lane and slow down? Because then we would be unsafe by going too slow, and wasting brakes, and fuel, by constantly slowing down & speeding up. And when your truck gets 6 mpg, that is a major factor. So cut us some slack. Even if you have to slow down. Where are you going? Home from work? To work? To get groceries? Got 20 miles to go? 5? 70? I'm not belittling that. Your life and things to do are important.

But bear this in mind. I may have 1500 miles to go. I may have already been driving for 10 hours. Or have 10 to go. And this is how I make my living. On the highways that were designed for military and industrial purposes. Check on that if you don't believe me. And you can get your car back up to speed in about 2 seconds. It takes me a lot longer and wastes a lot more fuel.

So thanks for all the nice words about truckers here. It does mean something.

And I'm glad the OP wasn't hurt in the accident. Because no matter who is at fault, no one deserves to get hurt or worse, no matter what the vehicle is or what the situation is.

This is exactly what happened to me! I was in the right lane and this Semi truck was in the middle lane. And got right up beside me and started switching into my lane with no blinker and started slowly pushing me towards the guard rail. Well luckily just before I hit it, a interstate on-ramp came up , so i turned onto it.

Don't call the trucking company without talking to the insurance company first - An attorney may want to be your next phone call but please bear in mind - if you make a deal with the devil, he will get his cut. Atty's usually get the majority of what you get.

Your starting point with the insurance company may be 4 times your medical bills for the injury alone - keep track of all your days off, doctors visits (including miles driven and time you took to do it) and also anything that you can't do that you could do before the accident.

Don't be a dick to them - they have a job to do just like our truckers. But they want to see a fair, equitable settlement - an attorney will want something more than equitable just to get a bigger cut.

If you don't need an attorney - don't get one. Settle it for about 3 times your med bills for something "equitable" but ask for 4 x to begin with then come down - they'll see you're reasonable and hopefully cut you a fat check.

DO NOT SETTLE until you are better though.

I'm not telling you this so you can rape the company - just telling you know what "reasonable" is. Most don't...

Keep me posted - you can PM if you want.

PS:

Zip - love to you and all our trucking friends - see ya on the flip side... 10-4?

Well, I live in Canada so I don't have to pay any medical bills (I just had to pay $75 to have the doctor fill out the AB-2 form which my insurance will reimburse me for), and my insurance is paying for all my physio and time off as well (just waiting for them to actually start sending my money for my time off work).

As for the owner of the the truck drivers company, I am just gonna call him to see what he wants but be very vague during my whole conversation with him. If he says he wants to meet me in person then I'll definently consider talking to a lawyer before I meet him.

I'll keep you all posted tho.

Well that's SWEET! Maybe I'll give a little more thought to Hillary's plan if it's going to be that easy. LOL NOT! Just kidding - sorry, guess I didn't realize you were subject to those rules. Disregard my advice then...I have no clue about claims in Canada.
