hello computer nerds . . .

my buddy here is gonna type his problem:

HP Laptop wont boot, it sits at the HP screen saying Press ESC to change boot order or F10 to enter Setup. if you press f10 it just says please wait forever. if you press esc it just shows some bullshit and doesnt let you change the boot order. Tried removing the memory, tried taking out the processor and applying new thermal grease. tried taking out the cd rom drive, the hard drive, nothing gets it past this screen. What could be wrong? its a ZV5000 Pavilion

It sounds like you need to get into the bios to change what device your booting from. You might try to update your bios on cd and see if it will boot from cd auto read. Now that I think of it make sure there is no cd in the drive and try restarting the computer. sometimes if there is a music cd in the drive windows will automatically try to boot from that cd disk and will obviously not work.

Normally when a computer will hang at the post screen it is trying to figure out the drives! Install a new HDD and see if it will go past post! Also go into the Bios and check to see if it reconizes the HDD and the CDrom!

Okay if your sittin there hitting ESC and it WONT go into the bios then your screwed that way. If it absolutely will not go past that screen then you definitely have hardware problems.

These are what you can try..

A) Turn it on and just LET IT SIT there and see if it will eventually go past that screen and boot into windows if not..

B) Get your hands on some RAM that is compatible with your laptop and stick it in and try it out (dont forget to remove your stick of RAM first). Does it boot with the different RAM? yes, there ya go your RAM was the problem. Doesn't boot?

C) Get your hands on a different harddrive, stick it in and see if it goes past the boot screen. If so then your old harddrive was bad, get a new harddrive.

Go from there... Its not a "Press F8 to go into safemode" type deal, it wont even go past the boot screen so sitting there and pressing F8 aint gonna do shit.

And if none of those options work, then your motherboard is probably dinked, get a new laptop.

to add to what my co-worker johnny v suggested. remove your hard drive and see if it boots with out it into the setup. Bad IDE devices can cause a POST hang.

also if your savvy enough you can locate the cmos batter and remove it as well as the main battery let it sit for a few hours then replace both batteries and boot it. see if this helps. this should effectively reset your Cmos to factory defaults.
