Question

Home Theater

My family is currently in the process of buying a new house. Hopefully we'll know in the next week or so. So when I went to look at various odds and ends that we are changing when we buy, it i noticed that the living room is wired for a 5.1 surround sound system.

I'm going to be honest and say I don't know shit about home theater but I need help from anyone who does. I'm looking for a economical package theater ($500 or preferably less) I know that it isn't going to be a great system but it will be better than no system at all. A dvd player is not necessary I already have one, the only thing that absolutely is needed is ceiling mounted speakers for both the front two and the back two.

What would be a good website to buy this from? What is a decent brand? What specifically should I pay attention to when looking for a system? Finally, how the hell do I find the specific speaker ceiling mounts for the specific speakers? If anybody can steer me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

this should give you an idea whats out there as far as speaker systems for 5.1 wiring.

5.1 Sound Surround System - Compare Prices, Reviews and Buy at NexTag - Price - Review

pay attention to the ones that say home theater

as far as ceiling mounts, if you find a specific system that you like you could do some research into them and see if there's any mounts that you could get separately or if they're included.

Good rule of thumb... stay away from anything 5.1 that cost less than $400. Thats just my opinion. When I was shopping there seemed to be a "quality" break at that price. Anything under sounded like headphones turned up to high.

If youre prewired your in good shape because thats half the battle.

Believe me I agree with you JA but moneys tight with all the money going into other things in the house and since its prewired I figure a cheap system sounds better than TV speakers and I can always upgrade

about that wiring, thats half the fun I think haha.

Idk about you but the way we have ours here, we just built some shelves and had the speaker stand in them. my parents house would be house party capable if it wasn't for the fact that they're always home haha.

heh, I was originally gonna leave the front two on the shelves but they are wired for the ceiling and I think it will look more professional. I am looking at this Newegg.com - YAMAHA YHT-390BL 5.1 Channel Home Theater in a Box System

But I don't know how the hell ceiling mounts work and what would work with these speakers. Any body?

Onkyo for the receiver. Infinity for the speakers. I have had the same onkyo/infinity setup for almost 10 years and it still sounds awesome to this day.

my b.f owns a home theater business, He mainly deals with high end stuff but he could get you some ideas on some good , not so expensive stuff.

My dad has an onkyo in his house, and its really nice.

he has a sony amp in his garage/shop and it works well too

Really? I'd appreciate any help. Only thing is I have like a 4-5 hundred dollar budget so the only real option i have is a home theater in a box. If anything can you ask what he would recommend regarding the ceiling mounts? Right now im searching around for Onkyo 5.1 systems since you guys are saying good things
