Veteran's Day Has Other Meanings

I have been very lucky in life and last Saturday I got luckier.

It was my birthday. I turned 50.

When I was going to school Veterans Day was considered a national holiday and I always had that day off school.

Somewhere between then and now it changed. Oh I know what it was. I had to start working for a living. Didn't get it off after that.

I was out of town all weekend doing many different things and had the best time of my life.

Sorry if this is boring. I guess you had to be there. :wink

Well, Cricket, I spent the balance of Saturday hanging with close friends, drinking and jamming.

Sunday I took a trip to the Amana Colonies which is an ancient town near central Iowa. They are reknown wine makers. We spent some of the time doing wine tasting. I got to do that with my middle daughter and her boyfriend and my wife. It's really fun when you can do "grown up" things with your kids.

I took a tour of the new Iowa Speedway which will be hosting NASCAR events next year. Tried to get a reserved pass for 2007. Haven't been approved yet.

Spent a portion of the day at a huge outlet mall called Williamsburg. I scored hugely with new winter clothes from Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica.

The rest of the story....a gentleman doesn't tell....

But it started Friday night and the wife is still smiling today.

I may be 50 but I know one thing that hasn't slowed down.... :wink

Sounds like fun. My mom is teachin me about wine...sucks I can't go to wine tastings, and taste the wine. I'm glad that your birthday was...uhh..enjoyable to say the least.

If you drink crappy wine it is, or if you start off with a full bodied wine like a really full bodied pinot noir.

wine is an aquirred taste... no one really tastes wine the first time and thinks its delicious!! lol

I think that would apply to many things. I didn't like beer the first time I tried it. I didn't like coffee, either. Wine included.

Now....it's all good. Except I have been able to stay away from the coffee. Glad I didn't get started on that addiction every morning.

that's true.. i didn't really like beer all that much when i first tried it either... i still don't like it that much.. i only drink certain ones.. as for coffee... it's in my blood lol cuban coffee all the way! lol

I'm not really much of a wine drinker. I have never had any wine , but the cheap stuff. Maybe one day I'll have to try some good wine. Not to expensive though.

well my step dad made me start drinking a glass of wine every day when i was about 15... it was the nastiest thing i ever drank in my life but he said it was healthy so i forced myself to drink it anyway.. lol i dunno he is a weirdo.. but ever since then i always drink wine.. i try for once a day but sometimes i forget lol

They ( I don't know who ) say wine is good for you. In moderation of course. A lot of Hispanics drink wine everyday. Not trying to be racial.

I just recently ran into Rosemount Estates. Excellent, stuff. And the homemade, from the Amana Colonies up here, is really good as well.

I love Bougle Neuvo...I'm sad it only comes out once a year, but a plus side. It's time to harvest those grapes right now.
