Did you pay off the debt or is it still there?

Pay the debt or at least contact them to set up a payment schedule to show you're working on it.

Not in the military but debts like that can ruin a house purchase - would imagine it would have an impact here...

if you haven't already...pay off that debt first. When you go through the application process, make sure you are honest about it.

financial issues can definately keep you from getting a clearance. if your debt is still outstanding, you might want to think about paying it off asap.
you have to think of it from they're standpoint... if this guy has major debt, how much money would it take to make him sell secrets? my advice, pay it off, be honest, and give your friends and family a heads up before they start the investigation

I agree, take some action to resolve the matter. You can say you were unable to pay the debt because you were un-employed etc. For the T/S they will send NCIS agens out to talk to some of your friends. So if need be talk to your buds first. The first thing they do is pull your credit reports, get a copy of them NOW. With that in hand you will know if you have any thing that is an issue to the Nav. Then they do a NCIC check of all crminal offenses. They then check with the police depts every where you have ever lived since you were eight. Also a check of your high school, and any clolleges that you attented. Then if there were no show stoppers the come to talk to you to resolve any further questions they may have. Hope this helps.

I know been there done that ACC USN ret. 23 yrs AD

try and get the issue resolved ASAP. on the application for your TS, be honest about it. there will be a spot for you to elaborate on it. like has already been said, be completely honest on that application. if you lie and they can prove it, you'll get fucked and not getting that TS will be the least of your problems. btw, i just had my 10 renewal come through...

they will keep that TS away from you for the smallest things. thats why im a YN and not an IT. around the same amount of debt as you. 3k. if youre lucky, NCIS wont look at u as high risk. 3k isnt much but they see it as you need money and you would sell info to the bad guys. clear yur stuff up.

one thing you need to do to avoid going into debt... FRAUD ALERT! call the credit bureaus and tell them you want fraud alert. that way if anyone steals your identity, they call you to confirm. if there is false confirmation, no stolen identity or false transactions. i wish i did that when my identity got stolen. just some words of advise.

also u can call the credit bureaus aka equifax and all that and dispute every bad thing on your credit history even if u know its true because if that place that has the bad record "like navy federal or a credit card or whatever" does not message back equifax in a certain time period they have to expunge that negative credit off your record. jumped up my score a hundred points that way. its some good advice you should probably take to it.
