Help from the computer gods please

Ok I bought a 19in flat screen for my bedroom and it doubles as a PC monitor. I want it so I can watch DVD's from my laptop and when I get a wireless keyboard just use it as a monitor from my bed,

Now I cant get it to setup where I can use both my laptop screen and the tV screen at the same time if anyone could help me set it up that would be great.

I dont know if this helps but I had to go buy a special cord and then "switch" from my laptop monitor to and auxillary in the start menu somewhere.

Im not sure though. Someone will chime in on this.

yeah I have the VGA cord and I can get like my tV to be the monitor but it blacks out my laptop screen (the tv is set as primary too and I dont know how to change that either), and I want both to work at the same time

go to the display settings, you will see two boxes labeled 1 and 2. number 2 is probably grayed out. RIght click on 2 and select attach. This should enable you to have both screens on.

right click on the desktop, go to personalize, display settings, and then click the boxes for This is my main monitor (for the main monitor) then click on 2 and click the box that says extend the desktop to this monitor

so I did that now it shows my desktop background but nothing else and it wont let me change the primary monitor the box is grayed out I want my laptop to be my main screen and the tv to just mirror what I do on it

what kind of laptop do you have? when you right click on your desktop do you see anything that say nvidia, ati control center or intel graphics?

i had to press FN and then one of the F keys on mine.

Green uncheck "extend my desktop to this display" and it will give you a mirror of your desktop rather then an extension.

completely forgot about that. look on your keyboard for a key with a monitor or box looking thing.It's usually f8 but will depend on what kind of laptop you have.
