Advice

So, i have worked at ACE hardware for over a year and half now. At the beginning of the summer I put in a list of times i need off for the track. Turns out about every week I was having to go and tell them that i needed it off and explained it was on the calendar i submitted at the beginning of summer.

Turns out now that school started again, I have been scheduled for the days i need off. I am sick and tired of having to remind the Owner, (makes the schedule.) I really am not worried about my job as getting fired as I have only called in maybe 5 times the last year and a half.

I need friday, saturday, and Monday off this week. Typically I just need Friday and Wednesday, but there are special events going on this week. I always have fridays off and Wednesdays after telling him prolly 20 times. Anyway, here is my question. Should I just call in on those two days to show him that I actually need these days off and not just want them off. Or should I try and switch with another employee? Only 2 will be even possible.

I have dealt with this enough, and even supplied a calendar and he keeps scheduling me. The owner also knows about my passion towards racing and what not...

Opinions!

I would see if I could switch with another employee and if that doesnt work I would confront the owner to avoid future delimas. Simply explain to him ( in a nice polite tone ) "I can not work XXX days, I can not and will not be here those days."

I would steer away from calling in on those days.

If all else fails you could begin to compensate yourself for your inconvience out of his inventory....

No i will not steal, not like i would want much from here anyway.

But I often enough I have to work my self at night on the cash register and be the only person with no breaks no nothing, because he let somebody go home or not have to come in.

But when i tell him i need some time off when he has neglected to let me have the day off, he tells me that i have to find somebody to cover for me. And i typically i find a solution, but I am really really sick of it. I think he needs to be taught a lesson. I am pretty sure I am just going to call in on both days.

Wait, so you have a calendar that shows that he has approved these days off? If so, I would just leave the calendar somewhere he's going to see it and not show up on the days you requested off. This makes no sense to me. If he ok's the days off, why would you have to continue to badger him about it and have him tell you ok only to re-schedule you that day? If you're not too worried about your job, just don't show up.

Well before I say much more, DO you have proof that he has ok'ed the days off? In written form?

No but he has asked me to put in a calender of all the days off I need. He has never not approved days off by anyone, i just think he forgets to look at the calender.

Hmm.. Well make sure you have some sort of proof that he's given you the days off. Either come up with a form like we have here at work with the days you want off and have him sign it, or get a calendar and put the days off you want and have him sign them. Then, once it's in writing, and he schedules you, just don't show up. And if he fires you for it, then you have something to show that he gave you the time off.

I dunno, the situation sounds pretty lame on his part over-all.
