liscense plates

Why does everyone cover up liscense plates for internet pics. I mean, anyone you pass while driving around can see your liscense plate number in plain view. It's not like you're social security number where someone can attempt to steal your identity... Just curious.

Anybody who has the right access can use your plate/make/model/year to find personal information through the DMV.

I've heard of someone having their car stolen from home. When the thieves got caught with the car at the chop shop they found computers which the people actually used to hack BMV records and find home addresses to the owners of the cars they wanted to steal.

When you can get someones DL number, home address, etc etc... you're damn right I'm blanking out my License plate number... especially since my car is in the top 10 most stolen cars in the US.

technology these days.. great point james. i guess anyone could get access to the internet, find out where your car is, then take it right out from under your nose...

also look at dragva, how many of those "help! car stolen" threads did they post? you dump 10-40k into a car and showing everyone in the world. so they watch your posts, see that you go to car show, follow you past your house and next day you wake up and no car.

in VA the police use VCIN which does link to DMV

Those "help car stolen!" threads really make my heart sink. It's almost a weekly occurance on honda-tech. In the past month FOUR EM1s were stolen. An EM1 is a 99-00 Civic Si just like mine.

2 were recovered intact, one was recovered during a chase which was wrecked and 1 was found a month later after a chop shop got through with it... completely gutted.

If they are gonna steal my ride they have to break through the garage door first and all that racket should wake up the dogs, which then should wake up the .357 S&W w/hollow points. That poor theif wouldn't hear the 'A M' in 'B L A M'!

Yay for garages!

My car is to old for a chop shop. A 1966 mustang is not on the top of the list. Someone might it for a joy ride it the could start it. There is a trick to starting my car and I am not telling.
