Different kind of tuner question

So Im thinking about getting a tuner if I have spare money to shoot the shit...

Well, I searched a little bit, but it doesnt look like my question has ever been asked...

Now Im not sure baout many of you guys, but my father has been working on circuit boards for over 30 years and now Im taking classes in college doing the same shit.

If I buy a used tuner, and it's still locked can I go into the circuit board and basically tap into it to reset the motherfucker and make it unlocked or is there a HUGE possibility of frying the board?

i think the locking of the tuner is likely software based. that being said there should be a way to access it and flash the tuner with a stock rom. the only problem i see is getting the stock rom.

If you're interested in tinkering with the board, why wouldn't you build a MegaSquirt in the first place? It would cost you the same or less than a good tuner, and you would have FULL control over all aspects of your fuel injection management.
