Gun under water

Alright, one of my buddies was not to far from the edge of his dock while cleaning his pistol, and somehow it fell in the water, dont ask me how he just did It is about 12 feet deep and it is in the canal of the ocean. And so he convinced me to help him look for it and we could not find it! We are going to try again tommorrow. We even bought a magnet that is connected to the end of a stick, but we lost it under water. It was not easy trying to find it, you cant see under the water at all. i even used a solid metal rake to scrap across the ground but to no progress. Did any of you guys have any suggestions to get it, btw is a .380 PPK/S and its stainless steel, do you think it well get corroded anytime soon.

Do you know anyone with any diving equipment? That would be your best bet.. otherwise just get yourself a flashlight and some good goggles and go looking for it.

First check and make sure the kind of stainless steel used on those is actually magnetic...Only some kinds of stainless steel are magnetic.

If you have an old speaker, break it apart and use the magnet from it. I used to work at a speaker company so I have a HUGE 8" diameter magnet that I use to retrieve tools that are dropped in the water.

not to be rude but cleaning a gun on a dock next to the ocean isn't the brightest thing i've ever heared. maybe it's better that he don't have a gun...

Doesn't matter how calm the water looks, if it's attached to the ocean, there's a tide, if there's a tide, there's a current. Should also be considered that usually the current is slowest at the bottom, but it's also the most turbulent which means the gun has picked up and moved (perhaps not miles away, but it's definitely moved).

I dont think the current has carried it away it would take a really strong current to move it...but it probably has a foot of mud or sludge over it....I would get you a mask and see if you can buy/rent a underwater metal detector....just depends how much the gun is worth to you .... money wise or sentimental value +1 on the not smart to clean a gun on the dock....bet he thinks twice before doing that again....I have lost enough keys and jewelry and etc there is no way I would have had a gun anywhere near there..next time tell him to tie his phone to it so when it goes in you can call it and hear where its at..lol

Sorry to add but tie a string through the middle and then you can drag it along the bottom. Figured I would mention that incase you didn't figure it out. Try to keep the magnet in one piece as it will be more magnetic w/ more matieral.
