I wanted a T/A so bad before i got my Mustang. I think most are going to say that the LS1 is such a better motor..but if its a project car than anything you spend cash on will be fast. I like the suttle changes on the ls1 98 and up body style

LT1's aren't a bad motor, they just get a bad rap and overshadowed by the LS1 which is just a better all around motor. Optispark sucks a fat cock though, that's probably the biggest knock on the LT1. They are nothing more than a basic pushrod motor so working on them is a snap, something you can do in the front yard. Plus, they are an iron block so it doesn't take an act of God to get some more cubes with a good bore job like the aluminum LS1 motor.

mod for mod, from what i understand an LS1 will gain more power per mod, BUT the LT1 is still capable of 400 horse power from bolt ons and a tune.

The only real detriments I know of to LT1 cars is the optispark setup, changing plugs, and single exhaust (if you're in Cali like me, you can't legally put true duals on if it came from the factory y-piped to a single, even if you put extra cats on).
They're also HEAVY cars. My friend had an LT1 Z/28, and he said he could lose something like 100lbs just by going to aftermarket wheels.

No, the 6-speed cars are T-56s.
EDIT: I've also heard the rear ends are crap compared to a Ford 8.8".

The rears are the weakest link on those cars, but with an auto they tend to last quite a bit longer. It's the big ass clutch dumps in the six-speeds with sticky tires that stress out and eventually snap the rear ends.
The Auto trany's aren't that bad. There are guys runing big power through them, but just like anything they have their limits and you will be better off with an aftermarket piece.

Well, yeah. A Chevy needs 350 cubic inches to do what a Ford can do with 302.

Optispark is the heart of the ignition system. In basic terms, it is similair to a distributer. They are just very 'squirley'. Pretty much everyone that I know personally with a modded LT1 has changed the Optispark at least once. They suck and there is a reason GM only used them for four years on the Camaros/TAs

5.7>5.0 guys all day long.
It's just that a Fox body is a much better platform (especially the weight advantage) for drag racing than the F-body setup.

The Foxes are lighter, stronger suspension/rear-end, and the motors are easier to work on and the aftermarket for the 5.0 foxes is just unbelievable.
