I just got back from Toronto. She arrived down there at 8 am, and started her first treatment at noon. By 4 pm she had received 10 units of plasma. How many more treatments she will need depends on how her body responds. The first time this happened in 99, I think it was (my memory is crap from too much stress), she took 19 treatments. With fewer units each time. The second time was in 02', and she responded so well she got through with 'only' 8 plasma transfusions. The treatments are tough to watch. They hook her up to a catheter that goes 10 inches in to her main artery in her neck. Carotid artery? Can't remember. Then they pump her blood through a big apheresis machine, a centrifuge that separates the plasma out, the bad plasma that carries the antibodies that are killing her platelets. Then the fresh plasma is introduced. Almost immediately at the onset of the treatment, she gets freezing cold, becomes incoherent, starts shaking uncontrollably, and breaks out in hives and spots all over. It's pretty brutal. Then she has to take prednisone, a steroid, to try to kick start her body in to producing platelets again. This drug has awful side effects. Anyway, her first treatment is done. But after the treatment her right eye was drooping....probably because of spending two fucking days in emerg here at home instead of being treated immediately. A normal platelet count in a healthy person is between 150,000 and 400,000 per mm³ (microlitre) of blood. When I took her to our emerg, by the time she was admitted, her count was 30,000. That's dangerously low. By the time she got to Toronto this morning, her count was 8000. Eight fucking thousand. The head hematologist at St. Michael's in Toronto told me it's a good thing she seems to have a strong system. Because a count that low could have caused organs to shut down, a major stroke, or worse. If I wasn't so wiped out I'd be spitting mad at out local hospital here. I will be later. Thanks again to everyone here for your prayers, pm's, and kind words. It really means a lot. My wife is not an internet person at all. She's 46 ,so she's kind of just not in to that at all. She doesn't really get how people can get so close to someone online, but I can tell you when I told her what was going on here with my friends at MM, she was touched. And she says thank you to everyone for your prayers. -Rick
