People only vote for the 2 major parties "because they're the only ones that can win." Problem is, that's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

They're so concerned about keeping one of the candidates out of office, that they vote for the other one, not because they actually believe that person's ideals, but that they believe the other candidate's ideals will somehow ruin their way of life.

Douglas Adams has the best analogy of the US Political system I've ever read. To paraphase it, the characters are talking about a planet of humans led by lizards.
"So they like the lizards?"
"No, they hate them."
"So why do they vote for them?"
"Well, they're afraid the other guy's lizard might win!"

That comes from one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books, highly recommended if you haven't read them. I think it's from the first one, though I'm not positive (I have the omnibus edition with all 5, so it's hard for me to separate what's in each).
