Should you learn excess skills?

so the debate is: should you learn skills you won't use on a day-to-day basis?

basically, extra languages, complex math, less common words, and any type of trade or other skill not related to your profession

readdyyyyyyy

debate!

I always thought to myself, sitting in math class, where the hell will I ever use this.

So I think complex math, and more in depth studies should be optional.

As far as the other skills, it always helps to know another trade. If you are a doctor, it is good to know about cars or computers, ect...

Yes, because it will help you become a more intelligent individual no matter what. There is always the possiblity you may learn something that also applies in your proffession. Maybe not literally transfer, but lessons you learn.

i agree

much of the same "methods" you use to learn things you don't need to can be applied to things you do need to learn

and you never know when you might need that one special skill that would end up costing you money to learn or have done for you and you'd be pissed you didn't learn it when you had the chance

such as.. carpentry and you want to build a deck for your backyard

shit outta luck now, jack!

I have skills.

You know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, there's like a boat-load of gangs at my school. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bow staff. I spent last summer with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines! I shot like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that? And I took em down with a freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

I think if you want to do such things, you should, and if you don't, then you shouldn't.

Brave New World hit the nail on the head: you need people of all types to make the world work.

But of course, the government doesn't really care if kids drop out of high school.

Someone's gotta flip my burger patties

as for learning things that might not serve no purpose, I would encourage it.

according to the show timewarp on discovery,
learning to juggle and juggling more items as you go promote an increase of brain mass by 3%.

Might not seem much but I do find it that if you acquire certain skills and talents, might overall increase brain stimulation.

Spoken well, and true.

I am a fan of learning anything new, regardless of how infrequently I will use it. For example: I am a fan of learning complex words ~ they always entreat those around me with thoughts of a higher intellect than I might actually have. and that, is always fun.

having a vast knowledge of different things with a key specialization in one, IMO, should be the most sought after. example: I work in a restaurant where there are 10+ spanish speaking people. Lucky me i only slept through my first 2 years of spanish, out of 4, and am now able to figure out where the broom went that was sitting there 5 minutes ago, with out much hassle.

On another note, I am learning skills from my job that, after this job, probably wont ever be used again by me except once in a blue moon. why did i learn them? to better my self now.

lastly, I learned how to do laundry, why? i don't know cause some day i will have a wife who will take care of it for me, but you never know, there might be that one day where she is sick and you might have to use that skill.

just sayin
