Man... If I were you, I'd be sitting down with my brother and having a nice long discussion about it. Basically I'd expect him to be paying for it in any way that he can and basically make him make my car payments for my next ride to finally learn some responsibility and to not drive someone elses car...

I had an accident with my bro's car when I was about 20. ( he had mine). It was only about $1500 in damage and I took out a loan and paid him for it so he didn't have to file a claim. took me about 2 years to pay off, so I learned to be careful with other peoples shit.

Maybe ask him to pay your insurance deductable so there is some kind of financial repurcussion for him.

yeah he is 19 were still trying to decide on what to do about this whole thing. Right now he is letting me drive his car while i don't have one. its an acura RSX so its a pretty fair trade off so far.

if i remember right, it's for newer model cars for, per say, in a situation of negative equity and you may owe more than the insurance company may say the car is worth. rather than just paying you some bullshit amount, they will pay what you owe

You are correct. So if your car is worth only $8000,, but your loan amount is at $11,700 and it's totaled, the GAP coverage <usually in your loan agreement that you also paid for> pays the $11,700. Most lenders are doing that now and if your lender didn't, it is offered under your auto policy.
