If there's advertising on the screen, the site is collecting data on you. Teoma used to be a kickass site, but then it got gobbled by Ask Jeeves. I don't think a conventional search engine is out there anymore, that doesn't provide more shopping returns than info returns. You may not be able to learn about something, but you can buy it from a dozen different sources.

I'm kind of surprised that someone would laugh at you for being concerned about your privacy....

kinda worries me that we're so accustomed to being spied on that it doesnt bother us anymore..

Of course it is. It's just legal, because it's buried somewhere in the depths of the EULA that they know you'll agree to without reading, and even if you do read it and disagree with it, you'll still click "I Agree" just to use the software.

People give up a lot for the sake of convenience.

You don't need to buy a Mac to be rid of the microsoft. Just download your favorite flavor of Linux, (all free) burn it to a DVD and install it.

You don't even have to install it these days, almost all the popular distros have a live cd: Insert CD at boot, use distro of choice with impunity, reboot computer at will to have no evidence that you weren't using the installed O/S.

We used to do that at high school to bypass the school's windows account restrictions. Its also a handy tool for retrieving data from a computer with a corrupt windows installation.

Its pretty easy to use; you will like it. I use it 90% of the time; I only use windows for playing games.
