I once had a "dead" pheasant fly out of my game bag and get away...

I heard that on the radio. Who would shoot a deer then while approching it shoot again?!?!?! He needs hunting lessons ive took deer at 300 yards with one shot from my Remington .270. So why would you need two shots and still not kill him?!

Because not all deer and not all people are the same. There's only about 1/2 inch between a dead drop and a deer that has the capacity to still fight.

With his Remington .270 rifle in hand, he shot a nice buck broadside. The buck’s front legs collapsed as it ran toward a fence and flipped over to the other side.


A second shot at about 30 yards away to the back of the neck put the buck down for good, or so Goodman thought

The buck stood up and knocked Goodman on his butt, attacking him with his antlers.


“It was 15 seconds of hell,” Goodman said.


Goodman thought the deer was trying to go through him as he fought it off the best he could. A few seconds later, the deer was off and running.


“I felt his front legs go over my face,” Goodman said.


The buck ran 30 yards and fell down again and Goodman was worried the deer wasn’t done yet

Goodman walked back to his tree stand and grabbed his gun, finally putting the buck down with two more shots to the neck.


HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF A HEAD SHOT??

Depends on how bad you want to keep the head as a trophy. You don't need a trophy with a point blank .270 to the face. I mean after the deer had kicked my fucking ass I believe I'd stopped giving a shit, but like this said this guy had been hunting since the 70's and I know that if you trophy hunt after awhile it becomes ingrained in you not to shoot the head because it ruins the trophy. Maybe by instinct from doing it some 30 odd years he didn't shoot the head out of habit, even after he had his ass kicked. Man have done stranger things in dire situations for a trophy of proof.

i shot a doe once and thought it was dead
once i got up next to it, she popped her head up and stared at me
then i shot her in the head.

i never had a deer fight back after being shot however i have had to slit its throat because the first shot didn't kill it

So did he shoot and immediately go see if he was dead or did he wait 15-20 minutes? I know if you go chasing after them right after you shoot, that deer is just going to keep running.

We have a winner! I always wait 20-30 minutes before getting up and looking for my deer. Even if you don't get a perfect shot, it should bleed out if you wait 30 minutes. Then when I find it, I lightly poke it in the eye w/ my gun/arrow to make sure it doesn't blink. No blink = DEAD!

I have heard stories where they will keep following the deer and end up having to drag it about a mile back to their truck.
