Wind Noise

I'm new to convertibles, and the stang I picked up has very bad wind noise at highway speeds. It comes from the top of the car. It sounds like a flag flapping in the wind at 70mph. Is this normal for verts? Should I be worried, or drive slower?

Thanks for the advise.

I get a fair amount of wind noise as well, but it sure doesn't sound like a flag flapping. Is the fabric/vinyl of the top loose or loose-ish on the frame of the convertible top?

It feels tight to me, but I don't have experience with convertibles at all. If I push on the vinyl between to two support ribs, I'd say I can press it down about 2-3 inches. Is this normal, or excessive?

I'm not too worried about it. I think it's a factory top on it, the guy I bought the car from probably doesn't even know what it looks like with the top up. He only took it out in the summer on nice days. Plus, the back window has detached from the vinyl, and right now it looks pretty hot with my duct tape on it to stop leaks.

This summer I'm going to fork over the money and have a new top put on. I was just wondering if I should not be driving on the highway or anything; basically if the noise is just an inconvenience or could it be something more serious?

I'm guessing the fabric between the two frame ribs is rippling. Oh well.

I don't see any reason why you can't drive it the way it is. It should be just fine until you get it replaced this summer.

The only problem I could see happening is if your duct tape comes off and the window becomes loose, although I personally have no experience with a loose rear window.

Wait a minute here...

That 'fake' roof holds out water and snow just as well as a mustang coupe.

Secondly... how the $!@* do you roll a mustang?? You would have to drive like a complete idiot to do it.

Lastly, there are two main reasons why I drive one in the first place:
1) Driving with the top down is absolutely awesome just by itself;
2) Having the top down gets ALOT of attention from chicks, alot of them being QUITE attractive. I have turned TONS of heads, been ASKED for rides by girls who (were) complete strangers at the time, and generally got tons of attention for it. (Then again, it could be my dead sexy looks...). These are girls who don't give a shit about the engine in the car, You can keep the manly girls who are interested in your car because of its heritage.

The downside:
200 extra pounds - just get a couple performance mods and that will be evened out in no time
Less rigid frame - get subframe connectors

convertibles are definatly sweet
<-----------

but if you can push it 2-3 inches, thats not normal.

one time i put my top up and forgot to latch the passenger side latch and wondered what the whistling sound was. Oops. no harm done.
