drag racing question
ok well im watching speed channel right now and top fuel dragsters are on and im noticing that when they do a burn out or go down the track it looks like the tires get taller and narrower but before they do this there shorter and wider. i have an idea to why this does this but im not sure. is it becuase when there still its just sitting there the weight makes in like that. any other info on this.

from my understanding: when the heat of the air inside the tires is increased, the tires expand upward. this is because of the basic physical/chemisty equation of >T = >A, sort of what gives hot air balloons flight (heat rises and expands)

Slicks have a very thin sidewall. They "grow" with speed. The thin sidewall in combination with the energy of motion causes them to grow like that. The taller the slick, the more it grows.

More like what darrel says, it's simply the tires being forced out from speed and gravity. They have weak sidewalls (for grip), a byproduct of a weak sidewall is they stretch at high speeds.
This is a good thing though, because it allows for lower engine speeds at higher vehicle speeds. It gives alittle gearing benefit. |

right.if you look at a slow motion video of a burnout, the tires are actually FLAT on the rear of the tire.

oh ok. gotcha. i just really never noticed before cause i mostly watch the races where you cant see most of the tire. like funny car, pro street and so forth. pretty cool. funny part is i actually first noticed it on birdiemans top fuel car today. cause i was really paying attention to see him race. he lost tho.

this is why they have to figure in more fender gap when building the car, to account for tire expansion

They expand and act like an overdrive gear from (sp?) centrificial force.

As others have said, it's basicly a centifugal force deal. They tend to get taller on the burnout as well, and you can actually feel it 'stand up' once you get on the loud pedal to start the burnout.
