1996 cobra bad time?
So I went to the track tonight got several runs and really did not run as quick as I thought I would. I know I spun a lot but still was hoping for better. Is this all she's got or does my driving just suck. This was my best slip for the night. I have a K and n intake and 4:10 gears and a ford racing aluminum drive shaft. There was a 96 stock gt with 3:73 running the same times. Do I just suck that bad?

i had 2.4 sixty foots and 6.3 330ft and turned out a 9.32 1/8 at 79mph... tires seem to be the big thing to help and we should be turning 1.8-1.9 sixty foots (no quarter time yet) but i have way many more mods to my motor... just gotta learn to launch right, do proper burnouts and shift good... oh and keep it straight

you need practice, a lot of it too. a 96 GT (stock) is way slower than a 96 cobra!

yeah with 4:10's you should be able to get into 13's no problem. your car stock can do a low 14, it seems like you just need to practice your launch a lot and make sure you're doing nice shifts

Any tips on a good launch? I'm new to drag racing. Also any tips of getting better traction. I'm looking at drag radials but I only get about 450 to 500 a month to spend on my car. I heard that control arm's help alot should I get a set of lower and upper control arms before drag radials. I need all the tips and advice I can get.

experience with launch rpm's maybe start at 2k depending on how well you can hook before spinning and work your way up and use as much rpm as you can before you start to spin, and slip the clutch out...

Yeah he pretty much covered it. start at 2k and slip the clutch, if you can launch harder go up 100 rpm and keep trying

I spin launching at 1500 but I'm going to get some better tires. I just have good year eagle zr45's on there now. Looking at some nitto performance drag radial's just trying to figure out if the 275/40/17 will fit the stock rims. Also maybe a control arm set to help the traction issue. Any one know if this one is worth the money? http://www.americanmuscle.com/rear-control-kit-7998.html?Cart=NITTO%20Extreme%20Performance%20NT5 55R%20Drag%20Radial%20(275/40-17)|Mustang%20Complete%20Rear%20Control%20Arm%20Ki t%20(79-98)^3^509.99

got a 14.2 out of it tonight with a 2.08 60 foot time. I really need to learn how to drive this car to its full potential.

The first thing you need to do is get better tires - i.e. drag radials.
The stock tires on our cars suck period. Then, get the tires well warmed up with a second gear burnout (if you have a stick). Rev the car up to about 3000 rpm and dump the clutch to get the tires spinning on the burnout. I put in a line lock which makes holding the burnout easy (no playing with the brakes). With drag radials you should be able to launch the car at 3000 rpms or higher. I rev up to about 3500 rpms, slip the clutch out gradually until I feel full traction, then drop the hammer. I also have control arms which help keep the car moving straight ahead, but I think the drag radials are a more critical mod than the control arms. My 60' times are usually from 1.8x to 2.0x. I power shift into third and fourth gears too. This is good for a couple of tenths. Practice makes perfect. |

if you have 450-500 a month to spend on your car then you can get some drag radials at american muscle and use the discount we get here. 275/40/17 will cost around $320 w/ the discount.
when i drive my brothers car at the track ('97 non-pi GT) i launch it around 2k rpm's and he has street tires (maxxis) but i dont dump it i ease into it and have very little spin and the best i've gotten out of it was a 9.5 and he just has 3:73's, cai and o/r-pipe so you definitely need more seat time and learn and you'll see mid to high 8's on that cobra. |

I bought a set of NT555's not the drag raidals but they still stuck pretty good did not have as much issue spinning. Had a little issue with the clutch sliping because it got hot. My CATS are getting really hot. Hot enough that the ash tray in the center console is to hot to touch. there bad I'm pretty sure so I'm going to get a OR x pipe next month.
