Went to the drag races today

As a spectator.

IHRA Pro-Am event. There were more cars in the field than there were spectators. I mean there were probably 2 dozen people there all day. I had a great time except for the lack of shade and heat.

I'm concerned for the competition if the turnout is normally like this.

It hasn't been a good couple of years for dragstrips. This is the first year at my local track that fri TNT before memorial day didn't have 150+ (only about 100)cars there to race.

it's been like that for a while now (ie. lack of spectators) at sportsman events. I put at least some of the blame on the anouncers, they don't seem to get the crowds into it (ie. explaining whats going on/etc) as they once did.
I also blame it on some of the tracks focusing so much on junior dragsters which is very boring for spectators.

Agreed! Most of the tracks around here might every now and then call out a winning time if it's something spectacular but for the most part, they don't say anything. While junior dragsters may be fun for the kids and all, they shouldn't be the highlight of the show.

some times I don't think juniors are fun for the kids either. I've seen plenty of kids crying their eyes out while the parents scream at them for redlighting/loosing/running under/etc.

Why would that be different from any other competative sport? Some parents go way overboard instead of letting the kids find something that is fun and they enjoy. No wonder most of them get so into video games.

I would like to go to the track for a test and tune, and some smaller events to get the feel for the people there. I suspect it will be very much like the motorcycle racing crowd.
