Best way to shift the 70w is adjust the tune for what speed you want to shift.

Best vb upgrade by far is the j-mod. It is a diy mod or you can have your stock vb recalibrated at VAP Auto - Specializing in 3.8L Mustang Performance

The link to do it yourself(which is what I done) is here TCCoA Tech Articles

Also might want to look into a nice stall converter in the 3500rpm range.

best thing to do is to try & see if any local guys are running autos & try to get them to let you ride in the car & see how their mods perform.
as to the shifting, you don't want to shift a 4r70w unless it's a ful manual valve body, it'll be faster in drive.
as to the j-mod, try to ride in a few cars with a real shift kit before you go down that road.

I agree, the j-mod/shift kit seems to be more opinion based than anything. Half of people swear by the j-mod and the other half swear by shift kits.

OP, you should really try to get in a car with one and one with the other and see what you like, because it really depends on how you want the car to shift.
