Something's amiss

I've had my 1967 Hardtop out at E-Town some time ago. It turned some pretty respectable times (14.6@95;60'=2.12) for a car I've got less than $5K in.

A few weeks ago, I took it back and was quite alarmed and disappointed that the best I could muster was 16.4@86, 60'=2.6. Had it out again this Saturday and got more of the same: 16.0, 15.5, 16.4. Although my R/T was back in form: .070, -.017, .030, respectively.

The guys in the timing tower had a good laugh at my expense, too (it ain't the purtiest think on the street). All-in-all it was a pretty embarrassing day.

I can't believe I'm nearly 2 seconds off what it's done in the past. So, I'm looking for a shop that really knows the non-EFI Ford SB in the Central NJ or Bucks County PA area. The folks who originally did the engine for me are no longer around. If anyone knows a reputable shop, I'm all ears!

I don't remember all the details, but here's what I do recall:

1970 302+C4 w/shift kit
10:1 compression
GT-40 ('93?) heads, 1.7 rockers
Holley 650cfm 4bbl vac sec
Edelbrock Torker 302
Lunati cam (part # forgotten)
Hooker Super Comp
Flowmaster American Thunder (no x-over)
1967 Mustang GT 9" rear, 28-spline 3.50 Detroit Locker

At the scales, it weighed in at 3130 with me (~210) in it and 3/8 tank of 92-octane.

Again, thanks for any leads!

The guys at East Coast Supercharging (they do work for my uncle's Corvettes) recommended JDM Engineering in Freehold, NJ. They in turn referred me to Crazy Horse Racing in South Amboy, NJ. I called them last week and set up an appointment for Monday 5/21/07.

It was a VERY positive experience overall. Chris and his staff there were excellent! Professional and knowledgeable.

We put the car on the dyno and found thh air/fuel ratio, HP & TQ all over the place on the first pull. A quick check under the hood showed 2 cylinders not firing. The culprit? 2 broken plugs shorting to the cylinder head. Boy did I feel stupid! But apart from some good-natured teasing about the condition of the body/paint, they didn't make me feel like an idiot.

A quick plug change smoothed the curves out real nice for pull #2. The TQ curve looked a little funky, but since I can't remember what cam is in it, there wasn't much to do at that point except to take it to the track and see how it does. I'll be doing that on Saturday. With any luck, I'll be in the mid-14s again. Will post results.

It turns out that E-Town is hosting the Central Jersey Mustang Club this Saturday. Kind of a double-edged sword...it'll be neat to see some really nice cars, but humbling at the same time given my car's state of (non)restoration.

After speaking to a few folks, it seems JDM really specializes in the newer late-model Fords. And they won't dyno anything they haven't worked on themselves. They were very pleasant on the phone, however, and I'm sure they're quite competent.

So if you're in central NJ and have anything older than 1998, you may want to check out Chris and his folks at Crazy Horse. 100 Main St., South Amboy, NJ. (732)553-9050 . I have no reservations recommending them! Sorry about this turning into somewhat of an ad, but I really appreciate the treatment and service I received there.

Well, mid-14's eluded me yet again.

The car didn't run *bad*, it actually felt like it was running pretty well. Felt like it was pulling the whole way.

But, the proof is in the ET: 15.5, 15.4, 15.38. It did launch a bit better. I was pushing the tree and cut -0.103, -0.096 and 0.027 lights, respectively.

It was time trials only, but I got a wave and a grin on the return lane from the 2005+ model GT I treed (to his 0.4) on the 3rd pass. He was quicker than me, of course.

Back to the drawing board.

I did put all the engine specs into Desktop Dyno 2000 and started to go through the Lunati cams to see if I could find a HP/TQ curve that matched my chassis dyno pulls. I did find one that looked like a match, the Lunati #00061. Anyone use this cam? More importantly, anyone use an E303 cam in a 1970-vintage 302? I plugged those specs in, and it looks MUCH better than the Lunati that *may* be in there.

Comparing timeslips from 2000 and the most recent runs, my mph dropped from 95.22 tp 90.99. Given the weight, engine, trans, and rear gear have stayed the same (3160 gross), it seems I'm down about 30hp.

Anyone have any ideas where I should look? Compression test?

I brought the car in to a shop to have a leakdown test performed...and it checked out ok. Aaarrgh!

The ONLY thing different is the rear tires. It ran 95.22mph when I had on a set of crappy 205/60R15 radials (24.6" OD). Now it's got 255/50R16 (26" OD) BFG Drag TAs, and running 91mph.

I'm stumped.

On Saturday the 14th, I'm gonna take it out again and make passes with both the street and drag radials. Perhaps I'm bogging down with the sticky tires. Could it be a little tire slip is actually a "good" thing?

sounds like your boggin with the sticky tires, plus the 255/50's have more weight to them so they are harder to spin.

Just a thought, but you might get more input on this if you put it in the tech forum for your car. Just sayin it b/c this part of the forum doesn't get as much traffic.

Could it possibly have been lousy air the whole time???

Had 3 decent runs on 9/1/07:

14.943 @ 92.87 (-0.196 RT)
14.772 @ 93.91 (0.193 RT)
14.936 @ 92.90 (0.050 RT)

My dad got 3 runs in with it as well. His ET was a little off, but it was mostly im getting familiar with how the car launches. He cut some nasty lights tho (0.125, 0.082, 0.027)!!

Anyway, the day started out at 70F, and topped out at 85F with low humidity. The times were about 3-4 tenths off the best it's run, so I think we're in the ballpark again thanks to some good air. Either way, it's getting a new top-end (a proven combo that works well together, not the mish-mash of parts I have now) this winter and perhaps stepping up to a 3.75 or 3.89 gear.
