No traction.....HELP.....

I knew I would have issues, I had no traction on the street and knew some of that was bound to translate to the track.

I have a 2012 gt with a manual and 3.73. It has the brembo package and the Pirelli P Zero tires (which apparently suck).

For mods it has lower control arms with relocation brackets (set to the lowest position.) Upper control arm, Adjustable Pan hard bar and 3" cat to axle exhaust.

I went to sac. raceway today and count not do any better than a 2.2 to 2.3 for the 60' (I would spin with even 1/4 throttle). Tires were set to 30 psi. hot. Second would spin bad even short shifting with half throttle. I just could not hook up regardless of what I tried.

My best ET's were 13.2 but most were around the 13.6 to 13.7 range. My trap speed was 106 to 108.

Part of the issue is that I would have to shift to 5th right at the end of the run. If I didn't shift I would hit the limiter before the end of the run.

Here is where I need some help. I would like to have a drag tire set up to take to the track as well as a street tire set up. I would like the the street tires to be on a 19 (I would rather have 20's but I doubt I could hook up with them and the smaller side wall). I would like the tires to be taller so I don't have to do the shift at the line and could pass it in 4th.

So what are you guys running out there? Please offer what ever tire advice or suggestions you may have. I can't hook street or track and I need a cure in a bad way.

I suspect if I could hook up I should run a 12.7 or better but unless I find a way to get some traction...............

Thanks in advance for any info you may have.

Ideally you want to cross in 5th, but you want to be at the top of 5th. You want to cross the traps at the very end of your 1:1 gear.

I'm shure the spinning & lack of experiance with the car are contributing to the gear problem, 3.73's should not be a problem.

you'll need to decide how serious you want to get but the easy answer is to just get a race wheel/tire package from the guys at brenspeed.

Mustang Performance Parts & Upgrades by Brenspeed

not only can they help you out on the wheel/tire end, they are all drag racers themselves & are sorting out some 5.0 combos as we speak so they can give you some good advice as well.

Driver Mod A Must with the skill you will kill!

I watch many new 5.0's fight what you are talking about. The 12.2 115 mph stock Perrilli equipped cars all have Lower control arms and exhaust, 3.73 gears and intake mods I believe and get great 60' times 1.8-1.9 < sounds to me like the tires do well in the right hands....I get mid 1.9's consistently on my stock 6 year old Perrillis (235 17's) and still have the stock springs and shocks and no relocation brackets.

The drivers are not beginners but skilled so you should be more realistic with expectations. Drivers with avg skills get into the 12.7 range with no difficulty getting 2.0 60' times and you can too.

Trust me, when you get the DR's you will still be comparing yourself to like equipped cars and find yourself in the same frame of mind wanting to be closer to those 11 sec. cars. You have the control arms and just need to learn to control your rpm and clutch slip for launch and 1-2 shift. If you get that 60' down to around a 2.0 you will have that 12.5 easy. Get that and then buy/borrow the DR's and see a 1.7 60' and get a low 12 or a high 11 sec run. I watch guys over the years come to the track and fight the car instead of learning it and the track and buy fixes that fail to fully fix the driver's overenthusiastic actions and they are always inconsistent and frustrated.

I have also seen drivers take to DR's like a duck to water and almost drive the wheels off their cars while others.....still fight the car then never go back to the track and just screw around on the street gettin beat by imports and getting trashed talked or laughed at behind their backs....

Nothing disturbingly funny like watching a 11.5-10.9 car run low 12's and the driver pulling his hair out blaming the track, weather, car in the water in front of him, tires, bad tunes but failing to apply advice that address his main problem while others around him are hitting their marks and having fun.

Advice is the cheapest and sometimes the best investment applied but mostly worth nothing when $ is believed the easier route...save your cash and earn your pride, keep to the track and learn to drive!!

Good luck and have fun first and foremost.

This is 100% of your problem. Regular radials can't be hit hard like a DR or slick. Swap tires to either one of them and its a whole different ball game.

As I get older humble pie is easier to get down. I'll be be back at the track, and I'll work on my skills.

I do think I will need tires to make the kind of improvements I would like to see. I'm a bit troubled with what to go with.

Shorter, taller...........guess I need to look at a gear calculator.

Part of the issue is that I don't want just a drag car. This is my DD that I put over 100 miles on each day. I also want to auto x with it as well as hit the big tracks starting with infineon.

What I need is a Jack of all trades so I can have fun in multiple ways. I know I will be a master of none that way but I'm ok with that. Short term goals will be 12.5 on street tires and 11's with dr's on a car that I can also rip through the canyons with.

It has to also look good to me that means a bit of a drop and wheels that fill the wheel well and look wide, with a near flush offset. I was thinking of the steeda ultra lights and 18" rims with 335/30 R and 275/35 F. I know the drop is not that good for a hole shot but maybe the shorter tire would give me a little more on top in 5th?

I just can't seem to make up my mind. Normally I have no problem making a decision but this car is giving me fits.

Then I would get some 335 DR's. The overall tire diameter should still be close to 26" so your gearing should stay relatively the same.

Does lowering the pressure in a street tire help at all? My rears are at 30, would I get any better hook at say 20? I am on stock 235/50/18s right now

I ran a 12.5 on the stock brembo Pirellis (255/40) with Boss Intake/CAI/CatDelete/Axlebacks on 3.73 gears, LCAs, and Springs. Traction on them SUCK!!! They suck so bad I would lose traction with t/c on while on the street and giving it about 50% power. I had to basically launch at idle and I still get sideways when I shifted gears. 60ft I get 2-2.1. Im a manual also.

I do lower my tire pressure to 25, I noticed that does help me with traction a bit. Go around the burnout box, do not burn out street tires as you will lose traction if you do. Just do a quick spin to get the dirt/rocks off your tires.
