Proposed 1/4 mile Drag Strip in Charlotte NC - Controversy
I don't know who all is familiar with this subject, but Billionare Speedway owner Bruton Smith and the city of Concord have been in a heated debate over the new Drag Strip he wants to build just outside of the Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Most of you do know that Charlotte is right in the heart of Motorsports Country and to not be familiar with the sport around here is unheard of ... anyway .. I was born and raised in Concord, NC the home of the track and grew up here for all but a few years I spent in South Carolina playing football in college. I live about 1.5 miles from the speedway and have all my life. Concord is an area that has grown by leap and bounds largly in part to Charlottes booming banking and business econmy and mostly due to the tourism the speedway brings in to town. The big stink is that the people who bought homes right near the track are complaining about the noise that will come from the Dragstrip ... even though they live the same distance from Lowe's motor speedway and the dirt track ... I have been waiting years for a quarter mile to come to the area since Rockingham is right around a 2 hour drive ... The city council went as far to have a vote to rezone the proposed site so he couldn't build the track ... and that prompted Bruton Smith to threaten to move the speedway else where .. so as of yesterday's new vote, he is being allowed to build once again ... I'm just tired of the "out of towners" comming in here and trying to screw with what I love about the area i was born and raised in ... as a mustang owner and a car enthusiast ... I can live with a few loud nights a year .. and I'm not immune to the issues that were brought up .. but people bought house here knowing full well what they were getting themselves into .. anyway .. just thought I'd share .. and if you would like to google the topic to get up to date on the story and discuss .. I'd be up for the conversation !
Also... http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/build-the-drag-strip That is a site to an online petition on the track .. all you have to do is google "bruton smith drag strip" and you will have all the info you need ... If you read responses the majority of people strongly agree to bring the track to Concord .. its a shame a few people can ruin a good thing ..

i am all for it! its 2 hours from me but the more dragstrips in the area the better. plus it should help a little with stopping street racing.

The benefits far outweight any noise negatives ... As of yesterday's paper the site had been rezoned ... but they are trying impose a bunch of restrictions .. just let Bruton get the track .. and everything will be ok is my opinion !

THere is an 1/8 mile track about 20 minutes from where I live. Across the street from the starting line is a house. This guy has lived in this house for years. People ask him how he can stand to live there with all of the noise from the track? He says to him it's not noise, it's music.
I couldn't agree more. I'd love to live that close to a track. Imagine all of the cool cars you'd see going in and out. When I was a kid, once a year there'd be professional truck pulls about 1/4 mile from my house. My dad and I would sit n the deck and listen to the trucks until they shut it down at midnight. |
