1980 Mercury Capri Wont Shift

i have a 1980 mercury capri wont shit into reverse or first i have to shut the car off and be at a dead stop to shift once i get it into gear i can then start it but it starts to move...???? any ideas? ppl have told me many things like it could be the 1st reverse syncro in the tranny it could be the clutch im not sure but im bot to tear the whole thing apart....
