Torque Converter ?


I was wondering if any of the mustang "Auto" owners had the Torque Converter installed in their car and what they think of it? It says it will drop .7 in the 1/4 but I think more like .2-.3 would be more like it. If anyone has some input I would appreciate it. Thanks,

I just want to be N/A and run a 12.9 @ 107mph. That is my goal. I will be adding some suspension work to get the power to the rear better and getting Drag Springs soon. Thanks.

It all depends on the rest of the car. Everything works together. Mismatched parts will slow you down considerably. A looser converter should be a big help and can gain you alot if it is a good converter. A higher stall just one feature of a good converter. It has to multiply torque efficiently too.

The torque converter can make a huge difference on most stock autotransmissions, provided you have the parts to go along with it.

However once you add a decent torque converter installed you have to be able to live with the results which will place more stress on your suspension and also your drivetrain.

On my first performance car which was a 74 LTD with a 460 and a c-6 transmission, I put a 2000 stall converter in it as well as a 4.10 rearend gear and it was ridiculous how much wheel spin that combo made. I picked up roughly .7 ET in the 1/8 from the converter (never ran 1/4 mile since theres not one around here) BUT I had to use slicks to gain that much because of the excessiver wheelspin. Without slicks I would have lost ET because there was no way in hell that heavy thing was hooking with any kind of stock tires launch.

On my tbird supercoupe I did just a torque converter (a 2400 stall from Ger, which I later regretted using because it was crap quality) and it basically made it impossible to get on the gas/boost in first gear without having slicks. And that was with the stock gear (2.73). Because of the excessive torque my supercoupe was making the converter rated to stall at 2400 actially stalled at around 3k which was near the motors torque peak.

My tbird launced so hard with the new torque converter and slicks it sheared the outputshaft clean off of the AOD after only about 12 launches. Once I put a new AOD transmission in, that was heavier duty and built for more abuse, it kept breaking the right motor mount until I added reinforcement to that side with a new welded support beam. Then it broke the transmission mount and then after that was fixed the second AOD broke. I ended up getting rid of that AOD setup completely for a c-4. Also the higher slippage of the converter and the higher stall speed made driving in the rain a complete nightmare. I remember it shifting into third more then a few times in the rain and the back end coming around on me (this is with street tires too) and that was without getting on the gas as well. I had to be real careful if I was in a turn (in the rain) and it shifted cause it would come around quick.

Also keep in mind that an aftermarket torque converter will increase the heat in the transmission especially if it has higher stall speed and slippage then the stock one, so you need to add an aftermarket transcooler to counter that increased heat. I recommend one of the ones that has a built in fan, having one of those on your car will go along way toward helping the trans live longer.

The trq converter im going to swap the stock one with is matched to my camshaft. But its a TCI break away converter with a 2400 - 2600 flash stall. Im sure that will be good with a circle track series cam and the stock rearend which will be upgraded to a oem style limited slip but stock gear ratio.

But with any trq converter it needs to be matched like the others have said above but it also needs to be matched with your driving habit and or use. Like for me I was recommended that trq coventer because the car will be a rally/road/dirt/oval track racer once in a blue moon but will spend most of its life as a daily driver. That trq converter has a 1000 rpm increase in stall over stock, but its also provides efficiency at highway cruising speeds over stock converters and provides hard launches at wide open throttle. Might have to consider the hard launches not sure if the transmission can handle it im sure the 9" rear can handle it

I only deal with the guys at Edge Racing Converters. Give them a shout and they'll get you a properly matched converter.
