Question about Gears.

Hello all. Hope everyone is doing fine. I have a question about gears. I had my Local Mustang Tuner throw in some 4:10 Gears, with a Tolerance of 10.5 . At around 90 and above I have a really loud humming noise from the rear end. Is this my Drive shaft? My exhuast? (Flowmaster 40s 2 Chamber) or something else I need to worry about??? Thanks,

Bragg

If it's your exhaust then the humming would be based up RPM, not speed. Not likely the driveshaft, they don't make noise (but they do vibrate). Most likely it's your gears. It's pretty normal for gears to make alittle noise, especially if they were't Ford brand.

What brand gears did you get? Is is simply speed based, or does the pitch change based on load (how much gas you give)? Just because the gears make alittle noise doesn't mean they were setup wrong.

It happens at around 90 and above MPH. I have Ford Racing Gears. From 0-89 there is no sound then from 90-145mph it hums really bad based on my speed. I don't know what it is, but it is coming from my rear end (Car)(LOL). I would like to know if this is normal or not because I don't want to mess anything up if I keep driving it this way. And yes you can do 145mph with 4:10s without a problem.

On the highway and with my 4.10s, I am at 3000 rpms at 70 mph. At that speed, I get in my powerband and waste fuel, but all I hear with off road exhaust at that speed is insane loudness. I hear no whines, whistles, etc. from the rear. However, I have FRPP T Lok and FRPP 4.10:1 ring and pinions that were re-shimmed 3x for perfection. A whine from gears is usually heard at very low speeds (i.e. 5-10mph) or at very excessive speeds. Do you have the same noise at very low speeds?

No Sir, I hear nothing at low speeds. Which is making me think it is the driveshaft or something else. I have no clue. Any help would be great. Thanks,

Bragg

I have been told by some that a little bit of whining is normal and others that a properly setup rearend will make no noise. I think it is just based on your own opinion. Normally if you don't hear any noise by 40 MPH then you aren't going to hear it after that.

usually if it's a gear noise, it will do it somewhere else at another speed. My guess would be to repl the driveshaft w/ a FRPP aluminum shaft and the noise will probably go away.

Ya ever think to check ur level of fear oil?I know it sounds dumb but maybe u got too thin an oil in there and when at high speed the gears cant p/u the oil and lube the gears.Just a thought and dont know if it holds water(gear oil i suppose would be a better terminology) but shit, might as well chek it ne ways huh?My rear end whines in reverse but not at all in any forward gears.I have 4.10's in an 8.8'' rearend

That is correct, a properly set up rear end will make no noise at all no matter what brand gear set is in it. Somewhere along the lines someone started a rumor that Richmond gears make noise. Eventually it grew into all aftermarket gears make noise. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Youre gears are past break-in...tooo late if bad set-up. Iagree to the driveshaft thing...spent 1200 chasing a vibration-turned out to be a bad shaft that was recently 'balanced'.

That sounds more like a trans issue rather than rear gear.

Did you check back with your "Local Mustang Tuner"? What was his, or her, reaction?
